Got some 315/30-18 Nankang CRS tires Monday and noticed the car was unstable at higher speeds, with the rest end having this floaty feeling.

First I thought it was sidewall flex since they’re a 315 on a 10.5” wheel, since I didn’t feel this problem on my 275 Nankangs.

But after doing a wheel wiggle test with my hands in the 3/9 position, I have noticed that the whole left rear wheel wiggles slightly, along with hearing a slight clicking sound, when jacked up without load. I’ve checked all the bolts and wheel torque and everything is tight.

Hard to really see anything in the video but the movement is there and I’d imagine the play would be magnified with the full weight of the car on it.

Toe links don’t show any signs of movement in some other videos I did. My first thought is it’s a wheel bearing. Anyone have ideas on what to check?

Considering the amount of aftermarket parts I see in just that shot, it could be just about anything back there. It'll definitely be a bit tricky to nail down.

Its either a wheel bearing or a heim joint. I know SPL has been having quality problems lately.

Thanks all. I also think it’s either a wheel bearing or heim joint. I don’t see any play in the toe link heim joints with some close up videos I took, so that makes me lean towards a bad wheel bearing. I need to figure out how I can test the bearing to know for sure if that’s it.

I haven’t heard of SPL having quality issues. Any issues I’ve had were a result of things not installed correctly (sway bar hitting FLCA’s).

Update for anyone fallowing this thread. The tiny rear wheel wiggle/click problem was the inner heim joint on my left rear SPL toe arm. Replacement heim joint coming in Tuesday.

I don’t think it’s what’s causing the squishy rear end feel, though. I’m looking into it being caused by bump steer. Dynamically it feels something in the rear changes during weight transfer transitions when turning from left to right and whatnot. Could still be sidewall flex due to a 315 tire on a 10.5” wheel.
