Egh, Hino is about as Toyota as it gets... it's like saying Daihatsu isnt Toyota lol

I had never heard of the VZ engines being influenced by Hino in any way, so I just asked my boss who is riding with me right now and he said the VZ in general is Toyota design with DOHC variants further revised by Yamaha. That's not to say Hino didn't assist with it in some way as evidenced by the T100 below (or perhaps it was only the 5VZ?)...

Things Hino has and does make for Toyota:

T100 partial engineering and full assembly
Fj Cruiser full assembly
Land Cruiser Prado full assembly
Toyoace full assembly
Suspension, axles, knuckles for various trucks and SUVs

Things Hino has and does make for Toyota:

If I am not mistaken, the 1994-1998 T100's that had the 5VZFE had the original Hino design (just like all the 3rd Gen 4Runners and simialr year Taco's). Then in 1998, production was moved from Hino factory in Japan to the new Toyota facility in Princeton Indiana and were then making the all new 1999 Tundra, etc... (4Runners still having the old design). Those I believe used the Yamaha revised heads. The 5VZFE as I have read numerous times, is a Hino design.

Lol, he ended up calling one of the powertrain engineers we frequently work with and confirmed that Hino developed the 5VZ-FE and that Yamaha did the heads. Learn something new every day...

People also forget that the development of the R35 and Gen2 NSX started well before this little thing called the GFC.

That was (and still) had/has massive effects on how vehicles are developed from scratch.

Remember, manufacture and assembly are the easier parts of the process.

Speaking of 5VZFE, I just fully rebuilt mine....ready for another 250k miles. Love my 3rd Gen T4R!

well it should for being 25 years difference...it’s a classic now.
Yep....so much for “timeless design” ;)

I should add, the 1990 NSX (which is 4 years older than the MKIV) still looks AMAZING today! Age is just a number...

I don't think the MKIV looks outdated next to it at all. It's just a different design language. It's a little bit cleaner, really. Still beautiful.

The MKV also looks really good next to it. It did take seeing a couple of them up close to fully appreciate the new visual design.

"Dated" might be the A70 MKIII considering it still retains some 80's boxy elements. Yet that's also a feature of those cars rather than a flaw. The best factory look for those MKIII's is the 1990-1992 Twin Turbo R. Dated looking... yes. Still a great looking and timeless design on its own? Also yes.

The MKIV does have a timeless look. It's impossible not to compare it to newer trends but a beautiful shape is a beautiful shape no matter what.

“Different design language” is just a nice way of saying, “true...it does look outdated.” Lol.

Every time I look at an MKIV I really love it. I did not say "true... it looks outdated". If regulations would allow it I'd be happy with that design brand new in 2019. That's not going to happen for obvious reasons and we have an also beautiful A90 now.

To say that my comment about something being of a different design language automatically means that thing is outdated would also mean to suggest that any other automaker that doesn't adopt the same design language as the one that is preferred is also selling an "outdated" design in the same new model year.

It's subjective and to each their own. Some car designs tend to stand the test of time a LOT better than others. Many of today's cars, with some exceptions, are very "busy" looking and that will date them fairly quickly just as 90% of overly boxy designs from the 1980's became dated within 10 years of their release or less.

I'm not of the persuasion that just anything is "meh old hat" simply because something new came along.

The MKIV is a beautiful car today. The MKV is also a beautiful car.

I enjoy looking at them both : )

Interesting perspective...

I didn’t say the MKIV is an ugly car....im just saying next to a MKV, it’s age is pretty apparent when next to a modern design. “Meh old hat” isn’t something to use against anything old (2000GT), but other cars during the MKIV’s era have withstood the test of time much better than the MKIV in terms of design (300ZX, RX-7, NSX) vs. their modern counterparts. This just goes to show the success of the FT-1 influence on the MKV.
