This isn’t my first vehicle with sport mode (other is a ‘15 Z06) and I have preferred normal most of the time in both. I simply find no advantage to sport most of the time, as I don’t need sport most of the time. Those times when a faster shift and stiffer springs etc actually benefit the drive are just rare, so I don’t throw away fuel, wear and tear when that expenditure doesn’t mean anything. I’m not shy about swapping modes for those times when it can give me the jollies though, and am very pleased with the fact that I have the option then.

Start in normal, drive till the engine and transmission have warmed up to proper temperatures. Put everything apart from the suspension (unless ripping through twisties) into sport, enjoy. Plus I noticed that the ZF is less jerky in normal city speeds in sport; looking at the gears chosen - just feels more smooth going 1-3(4) than ripping through 1-7 by 50 km/h... Maybe the tune will change that - we'll see after the break-in is complete.

I drive 99.9% of the time in Sport mode with manual shifting. As for jerky shifts, I found that the ZF likes to shift up at 2100-2200rpm for smooth 1-2 shifts, around 3000rpm for 2-3, (other gears are smooth at wider RPM range), and down shifts I gently blip (more like a gentle tap) the throttle while braking at various inputs as it varies by speed and RPM to assist in the rev matching.

If crawling in traffic I usually hit the shift up paddle from 0mph to crawl in 2nd gear which eliminates any 1-2 jerky shifts.

I am a MT driver so these inputs are normal and keeps me entertained while driving my weekend toy. There is a little learning curve, but got the hang of it rather quickly. I've not hit 1000 miles yet..

The alley way I drive through is a little rough so I start in Normal. As soon as I hit the street it goes into Sport. The parking lot at work is a little rough so I start in Normal. Once on the road I put it in Sport. So it’s pretty much 95% Sport

I drive in Normal most of the time and really marvel at how civilized a performance car is. Only put it in Sport to hear it crackle and rev match (eargasm). It's a waste of gas to be in Sport in the city because you can't go faster than the guy in front of you, IMO. I'm done with weaving in/out of traffic. See other drivers do it and it looks showboating and unsafe.

I can't believe a performance car with 335 HP gives me 28-ish mpg.

I've tried Sport with manual shifting, and with a 8-spd gear box, you do shift a lot. It's not the same as a true 6-spd stick shift.

Normal on the highway so I can actually hear the Jason Ellis Show over the road noise and ASD while getting ~30mpg, Sport mode hammering the fuck out of it everywhere else. Weekend driver, mostly for the touge.

Normal mode 75~ 80 mph highway travel...

Here is my custom sport mode settings for driving in city and suburbs when I want some exhaust pops and rumble....

I also have my Supra coded (Bimmercode) to always startup in sport mode and ASD (fake engine noise) is disabled in sport mode...

When I had mine (all 350 miles I drove it) I had it in Sport exclusively. My upcoming replacement will also be in Sport exclusively.

Sport will not shift into the overdrive/highway/mpg gears.
Why do you say that?

In my experience sport mode only upshifts when you get to ~3k RPM. It absolutely will shift into 7th, it does so every day when I'm on the freeway. Shifting to 8th would require cruising at ~95 mph in 7th to hit that RPM, which I haven't done, but I suspect if you did it would upshift again.

sport all the time, unless I see a black and white and pop it into normal to avoid any vulgar burbles.

Sport mode for me does go to 7th.

Quick question guys:

Is sports mode = up to 6 gears
And normal mode = 8 gears
or

are they the same?
Sorry limited to city diriving and rarely gets past 4 or 5th in sports.

think i found the answer

All gears are available in Sport Mode, and saying different is 100% mistaken. Sport mode simply holds on to lower gears longer to keep the rpm and responsiveness up - ready for romping.

Sport mode is, IMO, pretty much pointless UNLESS you’re romping AND need that extra tiny bit of performance. The programming and tranny are so damn awesome that there’s very little delay in bringing all of the ponies to bear when the go pedal hits the floor. Ditto the suspension. It’s so good that there’s very rarely a need for that last few percent of handling.

Personally and given the above, I am in Normal Mode 99.99% of the time as there’s no objective (performance-based) need to beat up the car with extra wear and tear. Subjective (ego/jollies-based) needs are a different thing though, and to each his own there.

I start in Comfort Mode then once engine and transmission reach operating temps its all Sport from there.

For some reason in Sport Mode the ZF likes to hold onto 3rd like a Texas red ant on the nads.
