I predict the 2020's will hold their value more than the 2021's+ due to the oil consumption issues and the fact that they aren't tuneable. Only time will tell.
The oil consumption issue looks to be largely solved with a higher viscosity oil. The 0W-20 is like water in the heat. Most people that have done the oil switch have seen the issue resolve itself from what I have witnessed. Probably exceptions. Toyota has been pretty silent on the issue. It will not impact the resale value IMO.

I think the planned production for the US was about 36k units (before COVID). So not super rare, but also not played out like Civics and Mustangs.

So you are telling me basically the "unlocked" 2021's are still unlockable even after the software update? Because i don't know. and no, i'm not gonna read that link neither, gimme a basic tl:dr. ?
1) I hate you for using that emoji
2) Yeah! If your car was tunable before, it'll still be tunable. There is no software that can change the hardware in the ECU (6/2020+ ECUs have different hardware).

Nice, now i have more respect for the lucky 2021's lol. I always like the way the 6 port resonates it's sound vs the 2 port head with the same mods. I have a blue A91 in my shop with the EXACT same mods as me besides that he's on a JB4 and i'm on MHD, i like the way his car sounds more than mine... is has a more raw rasp than the 2020.

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying a 2022 Supra 3.0 Premium as my daily driver, but the thing that is holding me back is the depreciation. I normally like to buy cars that don't depreciate much, so the total cost of ownership is low. Right now it looks like the Supras are selling at or above MSRP which is crazy.

However, for those that are going to hold onto their Supras for the next few years, what do you think a Supra 3.0 Premium with 36k miles and 3 years old will be worth? Depreciation of $5-10k is something I could stomach, but not more. I'd normally buy a limited edition version, but the A91-CF version isn't worth it (also I hate the two tone interior).

Thanks for your thoughts,
Jimmy
I say this as I plan to keep my supra forever but I would say dont worry about depreciation for at least the next 5 years on this car. You have better chance trying to predict lotto numbers in my opinion. You cannot control depreciation. The 2023 model comes out and you have automatic depreciation. Even more when 2024 and 2025 model years come out. Other cars like the 400z could impact depreciation (if they come out on schedule).

The car market is jacked due to COVID and supply chain issues so these prices are not going to change anytime soon in my opinion. Prices will continue to stay where they are at. Supply chain issues will continue to happen. Low production numbers and ending model in 2025/2026 as planned will help keep the depreciation numbers lower but this isnt a limited edition hyper car that will gain value right away. I see if there is any value appreciation in the car that it will be after production of this model stops. Until then depreciation will continue to happen.

Your biggest chance for depreciation is aftermarket parts.

yes. that is exactly what the link is saying. I am getting my 2021 supra (with recall completed) later this year. no TLDR needed here.

Right, an unmolested, single-owner sports car is going to hold its value better. No matter how much you think your mods are worth, very few people want to inherit the gremlins that come with an aging sports car with aftermarket mods.

*The following is just my opinion, and said opinion here has nothing to do with the fact that I currently own a 2021 with a 12/2020 DME date. Despite what you may think, I am quite capable of being unbiased in this regard. ;)

Honestly, I'm getting tired of this notion, and I don't believe it's going to hold water over time. There's essentially only two advantages a MY2020 has over the 2021/2022. One, is the availability of Downshift Blue (BEST SUPRA COLOR!). Second, is the glory of the unlocked DME. That's it. Otherwise the car is not as good in just about every other aspect that really matters. Sorry 2020 guys :dunno:

The DME issue of the 2021/22 being locked out of the box sort of sucks right now, but IIRC the 2020s will join them in parameter prison if the recall update is performed. So if you buy a 2020 from a dealer, or anyone that wasn't interested in modifying it, it will be locked :lock:. Also, I firmly believe that in another six months, the 21/22 and updated 2020 DMEs will ALL BE CRACKED, so that completely nullifies the DME differences, leaving Downshift Blue (or maybe a Launch Edition) as the single reason to shop a 2020.

The oil burning issue isn't a concern of mine, because Toyota knows exactly which VINs may be affected, and if the affected owners experience excessive consumption, and follow the correct procedures, they should be able to force Toyota to repair/replace the engine or buy the car back.

Anyways, I'm off to lunch...

ITT a potential owner asks how much depreciation can be expected on a Supra and owners tell them not to be worried about depreciation and just enjoy it. ?

According to @zrk, even after the software update recall, cars with pre 6/20 ecus, doesn't matter if it's 2020-*lucky*2021, the hardware is the same for both. So the software will be locked, yes, but a bench unlock will unlock the DME again, it's post 6/20 when the actual hardware changes. ?
