In the USA 3.0 is king. Where there's more drag racing, street driving, like fast cars, and don't care about balance or feel.

In Japan the 2.0 is very popular with the large tuners. it's lighter, handles/ balance better, cheaper. They tune them to 300hp, change the suspension and throw a aftermarket clutch diff in it and say it better/ cheaper car than the 3.0 is stock. Go watch some hot version and see for yourself.

Good summary. 'Murica baby!!!

But yeah Japan has always been a unique market. Just look at what they do with K cars, it's incredible.

Yeah, I am very confused at this. Almost all the reviews and articles I see say that the 2.0 has a mech LSD. I am not sure where the open diff information is coming from.
Mine definitely is an open diff. The slush and ice at the end of my driveway last winter answered that question real quick.

Reviews and articles are not always based in reality, actually more likely they are from a different region.

In this other thread where it was brought up someone emailed Toyota and they said it was a mechanical and all the reviewers are saying mechanical. Maybe they switched it?

When the 2.0 was launched all those years ago, I asked the Toyota USA team and they confirmed that it was an open diff.

I had a press car for a week and did a LOT of driving, including drifting. Unless the clutches were smoked on that thing, it was an open diff. Drove completely open, absolutely 0 lockup on accel/decel in both dry and wet.

So I jacked the car up and checked in Neutral, and sure enough the tire spin test confirmed it was open with the other side spinning opposite. The M-Performance Diff that should have been available is a clutch type (not a Torsen) so it should have spun in the same direction.

So unless they've added an LSD since then, its certainly open.

What's stoopid is they don't just make it an option for $750 or whatever - they'd still make a profit on the option when it gets installed at time of manufacture.
Apparently the same can be said about the 2.0 sales flop

There was also a road and track review as well that confirmed it.

Looking back all at the press releases, none of them mention anything regarding the 2.0's differential.
