I like how they've approached this. No secret that the internal idea behind the concept is the Supra but keep the name off of it until you have a more realizable concept with production closer in mind.

I also think FT1 was more about showing the world that Toyota enthusiasm is back and serious about SPORTS CARS. More than one model hopefully on it's way.

Toyota Motor Corporation filed a trademark for "Toyota S-FR" for "automobiles and structural parts thereof" on May 28, 2015 with the US Patent and Trademark Office.

Not to be confused with the Toyota F-RS, this trademark could be for the upcoming next-generation 2017/2018 Toyota Supra which will sit atop Toyota's future sports car lineup.

As for speculation on what S-FR could stand for -- perhaps Toyota does not wish to revive the full Supra name, preferring to indirectly reference it via the letter "S". "FR" would of course stand for the front-engine rear-wheel-drive configuration.

The other possibility is that this will be the name for the long rumored sub-FRS model.

Hm. This could be just an attempt to protect their FR-S trademark. I should have taken IP in law school....

Interesting! Given the timing and that a sub 86 car probably wouldn't be until 3+ years out, I'm going to guess and hope this is for the Supra.

S-FR just doesn't quite flow off the tongue huh? might just be too used to seeing FRS. Either way I'm glad to see a new "FR" hinted in the works.

I'd be surprised if they didn't call it Supra and instead go with a confusing S-FR name, especially since Toyota officials have already referenced the car as the next Supra.

Plus the S-FR name is going to be very often confused with the FR-S.

Could this be for a Supra concept maybe? I agree that it would be a really strange (and bad) decision to badge this as a S-FR if this trademark actually does relate to the flagship sports car.

I think this may be used for the upcoming sub 86 (code name 69DZ) concept coming later this year to the Tokyo auto show. Also Toyota renewed the Supra trademark sometime last year after the FT-1 debut.

Ah I hope not. I'm really dying to hear about another RWD sports car either below or above the 86.

^Another reason I love the Supra. The name itself stands for something and isn't just some acronyms that no one outside of enthusiasts know what they mean. All of the truly great icons have a real name not a series of letters and numbers.

That said Toyota would be CRAZY to scrap the Supra name in favor of something like FR-S.

This.

The Supra trademark is alive and well. My bet is the S-FR is for upcoming concept. It's a bit early to be trademarking the sub-86 if it's probably more than 3+ yrs out?
