More power to you bro! I went to tech school and we had a couple weeks learning and tuning various cars, so I have also wanted to learn about tuning my own car via my JB4. (Although I will go through Jesse at first LOL bc I don't wanna blow my car up) But I definitely will be watching this thread!! This is such a fun platform and who knows, maybe you'll even master it and jump into Ecutek or BM3/MHD!!
Thanks man! No shame in starting with a Jesse tune and going from there. I have some examples of his map 6 settings for guidance but will be doing the custom tuning/logging myself.

I'd definitely be interested in proper calibration tuning at some point. Maybe my BMW race shop Thunder Bunny Racing will need an in-house tuner for their new dyno šŸ˜‚. That's a different level that will require plenty of training, I'm sure.

Thread Revive! After fooling around with the JB+ a few months, I've just had a JB4 delivered yesterday.

Since the purpose of this thread was general Map 6 questions, I'll start:

I am looking to shift my Map 6 from a 93 Oct tune to a 93/E30 tune. When adding E, I know I need to watch the fuel trims.

  1. In my GTI, staying under 40 for fuel trims was considered pretty safe. What is that value on this platform?
  2. Based on the previous question, if my fuel trims are too high, can I raise the FOL value to drop the trims? If so, what range of values are OK?
  3. Again, in the GTI, boost safety was typically set 2 psi over the max map 6 psi. Is that consistent with the Supra?
BMS has answered my questions: (Thanks Terry!)

  1. Same as GTI, stay under 40 for fuel trims to avoid leaning out.
  2. Supra does not use FOL control, stays at 0.
  3. Boost safety shall be set 2-3 psi above maximum requested boost.

Well, you guys know I like to s***-stir a little bit around here, so here's Terry Burger's response to questioning the lack of Map 6 resources on this forum:

Yes, he's a founder of Burger Tuning and inventor of the JB4 on the BMW platform.

Cheers to these guys for doing free Map 6 tuning for simply buying the product. Lets not pretend that anyone knows better than the guy who invented the piggyback tuner.

pls no ban

Thatā€™s great! Hope no ban for you either. I wouldnā€™t dare mess with that stuff. But if you understand it, more power (pun intended) to ya šŸ˜ƒ Itā€™s cool that JB4 is willing to work so closely with you & their product. Makes me feel better about mine. I still need Jesse though šŸ’Æ % andā€¦ I turn mine off for subtropics tracking.

Fuel blend sounds like a good thing as well. But itā€™d be something else Iā€™d have to worry about. Lugging cans to track & I really enjoy that I can just drive this car w/ 93 octane lap after lap. Mega personal choice. Hence why this is extra impressive what youā€™re able to do šŸ‘šŸ¼ šŸ‘šŸ¼ So many cool options for Supra owners!

Totally understand! I'm a mechanical engineer by trade and the PID tuning of the JB4 is right up my alley. No shame to anyone who wants to pay a professional, but just be aware that Burger will do this for free.

Fuel blending is awesome, but if you don't have E85 readily available at stations near you, its just not worth it. No need to lug cans and whatnot.

I just want to mention that you've got a great/positive attitude on this forum and I appreciate that!

Burger will do it for free. But have you seen the logs from some of their maps? As all things, you get what you pay for.
I haven't but based on people's feedback here, it sounds like their WGDC/FF PID tuning is not great on this platform. Specifically the wastegate adaptation (aka auto-PID tuning) is meh, and I'm aware that Jesse disables it.

I still believe that the more logs they see, the better they can get it dialed in. It sure would be nice for them to get enough feedback to actually have the default maps work smoothly.

On that note, if anyone has any logs they'd like to share on Datazap and link here, please do so!

AFAIK, @Jesse DaBears disables it conditionally based on the car, but that might not be the case anymore. eitherway, yes.

They have seen thousands of B58 logs. https://www.jb4tech.com/forum/model-specific-engine-tuning-modification-discussion/b58-b48

JB4Tech.com is the website where you upload logs to have Burger look at them. It's not for lack of data they haven't improved the default maps.

Is there any reason they struggle with this platform in particular?

To me, a B58 is a B58. With identical mods, IATs, and fuel, why would someone require different settings? I can't imagine there's much variation between engines.

It doesn't seem like it should be difficult to create a solid OTS map.

All cars are different, all fuel is different, all elevations are different, JB4 is already 'cheating.' It's nearly impossible to get a good OTS map for a piggyback tuner at all.

I think it may be a B58 specific problem though...

I use both OTS maps (Map 3 [+6 add] for 93 oct) and my own (Map6 [+7.5 add] for E30) on my GTI. Both of which are perfectly smooth with near perfect logs. AFAIK, there's no FF/WGDC stuff on the VW platforms though.

Interesting thread. I think itā€™s great you want to DIY MAP6.

I think Terry (God bless this man and his inventions) and BMS havenā€™t supplied great MAPs or advice to folks in the past. I remember one person who was told to run either MAP 3 or 5 (per them) on his Supra and blew the turbski. Iā€™ve heard anecdotally that their supplied MAP 6s are no bueno (again Terry, you guys awesome if reading this).

For most of us, atleast at this life stage of the Supra and the cost of the car, we would prefer a professional to remote tune the JB4 . Sure we could start with a base MAP6 and self tune it for days or maybe weeks, learning the ins and outs of the system, hopefully getting it dialed inā€¦. Or we can pay someone who knows them already $500 bucks.

After 10+ revisions for just 1 fuel trim, I promise our cars are wildly different despite similar mods. Simple variables day to day seem play a massive role in tuning MAP6. Kudos to those who are willing to DIY it! Iā€™m so glad Jesse is here to help the rest of us.

Correct its car dependent. If the car finds its happy spot on its own then Ill leave it on. If its not hitting targets, over targets, or compensates with wild swings ill set it where I feel it needs to be and lock it.

With ya. I just don't have the knowledge base or want to learn that. I love cars! But not in that kind of way... I really respect what Jesse, Zack and Adam can do! For someone like me, I'm happy as a pig in šŸ’© to get my car dialed in suspension wise on track. And then someday hit poor Jesse up again for a tune w/ an aftermarket manifold (like Zack said from day one ), living in such a hot climate. I just see me doing it, eventually. All smart kids! Lotta respect. And I'd buy it from Jessee for sure. He's been mega reputable as a seller to me for other parts.

Funny cuz I didn't put 2 & 2 together that Adam lived in TBR land and this was his thread! Damn... Greenville SC is looking more & more attractive every day šŸ˜ Glad so much great Supra work is going on in that neck of the woods!

I'm happy to hear BMS was helpful, unfortunately it's hard to find good customer service these days.

I am waiting until I get back into town to purchase a Map6 from Jessie. I don't really know much about reading logs and would rather pay for the peace of mind.

Now if only we could run a gauge pod while also running a JB4....
