These cars aren't going to appreciate for decades, if anything. The only way it will happen quicker is if EVs completely take over and ICE vehicles are long gone. But other than that, don't count on the MKV to go up in value. That's not a good reason to hold on to one of these vehicles.

Sold my $16,000 1984 Supra to buy a $160,000 home in 1986. Home now worth $1.9 Million. Got Home Line of Credit on the house and bought a 2022 Supra with it. Go for the home and a better wife next time. Good Luck.
Built a new home in 2016 for $660k. Less than 10 years later, is now valued at $1.2 million. Crazy huh?

Obviously I know homes are a better investment than a car. I guess I was wondering if it could be considered a collector’s item down the road. Sounds like the majority of you do not think so. Bummer.

I’ll drive her up and down the coast another year or so and likely will sell her.

If that happened in my area people living here would not be able to afford the property tax. It is nice for homes to appreciate in value, but not when it doubles..it comes with property tax noone wants to pay (in my area)..

Nobody, no matter how much crap they're slinging can tell you what will be worth money down the road and it be facts. There could be crap box vehicles running around right now worth money down the road that all of us think are trash right now and the spectrum could be the total opposite for cars like the Supra etc. There's just no way to tell what, if anything, will appreciate or be worth more than what you paid down the road for something.

I don't ever look at a car as something I expect to make money on down the road. I bought my Mach 1 and my Supra to drive and enjoy them. No car I own will ever be a garage queen and that includes any classic car if I ever get around to getting one of those.

In my opinion, the chance of your car appreciating are slim to none, especially being an automatic.

Furthermore, if the rumors are true that Toyota (and others) will continue making similarly sleek manual ICE sports cars, ala MR-2/Celica in the near future, then the price of all our cars is likely to take a significant hit.

It was billed as the last hurrah for manual ICE cars but it is increasingly looking like they will live on another round or two, making the Supra MKV less relevant. And lets not forget that the BMW hate it garners only underpins the unlikelihood of it appreciating unfortunately.

Don't get me wrong, I think its a great car and its BMW DNA is one of its best traits, but alas the enthusiast car market doesn't work that way.
I have to disagree. I sold my '93 Rx7 a little over a decade ago for $11k, because that's what they were going for then. Now look where the prices are...

Well, to begin, you sold the RX7 REALLY cheap since I bought mine more than 11 years ago and it was 15K and was a cheap price. If your car was in good shape, it should have been around 20K at least.
But that price difference apart, what made cars so expensive in the last 4 years was COVID and all the shortages that it brought since many cars that would have never go up in price, got more expensive than buying a new model. And yes that might show how unexpected circumstances can happen, but COVID and its aftermath was a really rare occurrence and prices are slowly going down again and I would not be surprised if only the rarest, most special cars will keep that high price and the rest will go down to what they were before the pandemic.
What I think about the Supra is that it may not go up in price (at least much) but I hope it retains its price pretty good, kind of what a Porsche 911 does, so basically depreciate very little. I hope :)

Property taxes here are very high. I pay $18k/year now. But my property taxes weren't much lower in 2016 when the house was new.

I think home values are artificially high right now and a correction is inevitable.

I've known many people who got carried away with real estate. They'd drive around in a faded Toyota Camry with 300,000 miles on it, just so they could keep buying property. When they finally thought they'd buy a new exotic car, they came down with an illness (like Parkinson's) that prevented enjoying such a car.

Yes, having a house is great, but you should determine whether having a smaller house and a nice sportscar is worth more to you than a large mansion with a Toyota Tacoma.

By the way, does your insurance agent know how few miles you are driving, annually? Make sure they do. My insurance is $600/year for 6000 miles, and I live in a very big city.

Did anyone really think the MK4 would ever be worth the money it's fetching today?
IMO the MK4 is worth every penny they're selling for.
Will the MKV have the same results of increased value 30 years from now?
None of us really knows but I'm willing to take that chance by taking extremely great care of what I have.
As far as real estate goes, it's the same deal. Take care of your property, and the value will go up.

Agreed...

If it wasn't for the fast and furious movie the MKIV would have been long forgotten!

I am sorry but it is true (besides the point of being a great engine and all) if it wasnt for the Fast and Furious movies, the MKIV would have been just another decent japanese sports car.
Just look at the comparisons of the era(before the movies) between it and the FD RX7, NSX, etc. it never faired that well.
