I picked up my 2024 MT in absolute white in November, ever since I’ve been out of breakout period and started ripping on it, I’ve slowly noticed this issue getting worse. I can almost never get into 2nd gear when I’m gunning it. 1st launch is fine, but then when it comes time to shift into 2nd gear it grinds and just sends me back into neutral. It’s a very loud and obvious grind, like the synchro isn’t even there. I have never money shifted the car, and I have daily driven manual for over two years before buying this car. I mentioned it at the dealer when I took it in for the first oil change, and they just dismissed it. I think it might be from the CDV not allowing the clutch to come out quickly enough, but I think it might be something worse than that.

I’ll try to get a video of it later and post it in this thread but what do you guys think?

Two WHOLE years? Sounds like you're abusing the fuck out of it. How about you just take your time shifting. Your car will sound a whole lot nicer, and last longer.

The car is like 6 months old dude. The car that I daily drove before this one did not have a CDV and I know how to find the bite point very quickly and easily. The CDV makes it like a mystery in the lower gears. I do take my time shifting, when I'm driving normally it is completely fine, but in high RPM scenarios, it WILL NOT go into 2nd gear, the rest of the gears are fine. I'm going to be taking it into the dealer and I will insist on having them look at it.

I have a 23 MT with 15000 miles on it, I've owned it since 8000 miles.

I've never had any issue with gear grind, not once. Either before or after I did the CDV delete (around 11,000 miles). And yup I drove the piss out of it before I did the CDV delete with multiple redline shifts at WOT.

IMO, you should take it to the dealer and have them check it out. I say this because I bought an S2 Rx8 brand new many years ago that also had a high RPM 2nd gear grind and the dealer fixed it under warranty by replacing the entire transmission. While it's possible doing a CDV delete will help the situation, I would be reluctant to rely on that.

Good luck, please let us know how this pans out. :)

Side question: one thing my car has always had is a bit of a clunk between fast gear changes or when stabbing the throttle abruptly. (Happens more frequently in sport mode). Wondering if you get that at all?

I do get that as well yes, I assumed it was from the CDV, but you said you did the CDV delete… is that clunk still present? Also in fast gear changes, (i notice this most in 3rd-4th) my car will sort of overboost/revmatch, Like it thinks i’m downshifting, and then it backfires hella loud, makes me have to let the clutch out in neutral then put it into 4th. I have a jb4, intake, rk ti track edition, and a catless downpipe however my car would do this when it was just the exhaust. I didn’t have the car stock long enough to see if it did it or not without any upgrades.

Yup even after the CDV delete it still clunks - more so in sport mode which I attribute to the throttle mapping being more aggressive. I've had some MT owners say their car clunks like ours, and others say theirs does not, so was just curious.

As for the overboost revmatch I get that as well - even in sport mode where I have the auto rev-match disabled. I didn't notice it when the car was bone stock, but after I put on the MST v3 intake and can hear everything the throttle is doing, it became apparent that under certain conditions it behaves as you've described.

Have you noticed wheel hop at all?

Try turning off the auto-rev matching and see if it makes a difference. You can only do this in Sport mode, FYI.

Are you pulling straight back into 2nd? You might be getting 2nd gear lock out, which I used to get. This is my 1st BMW manual, and it is a little finicky compared to previous manuals I’ve owned. Once I got used to it, it did improve. What significantly helped was the Auto Solutions shift kit, it made the shifting feel more precise, and also less rubbery feel.

I’ve only had this happen a few times, and none as of lately. Been launching, dragging, and beating the shit out of mine for 37k miles. The few times it’s happened I think I might have been letting the clutch out a little too early, or just a random tick where the trans just wasn’t feeling it

Everytime I’ve tried to race my buddies for fun, it always grinds and locks me out of 2nd, ruins the fun completely.
