There appears to be a growing concern for those of us with 2020/2021 owners who have the OEM plastic oil pump. While some have had this replaced by Toyota under warranty ONLY after it has failed, some are replacing them with the all-metal revised unit as a precautionary measure to avoid potential issues possibly leading to complete and expensive engine failure.

While this is not meant to be "yet another oil thread", I'm curious to see what the actual results are and how dire of a scenario is this especially when compared with the other safety issues such as the brake assist and the 4G/DCM which have actually been addressed by Toyota.

Not replacing mine until it acts up. I regularly monitor oil level and pressure. If it gives any hint of problems then I will install the metal version.

Mine fails to mesure oil from time to time, but i have regular oil pressure on idle 40 psi and WOT around 80 psi. Doesn't throw any codes, so I'm keeping it for now until I see it act up then ill probably switch to a metal pump.

I wonder how many that have failed only needed to replace the pump vs the ones that failed and resulted in what some have said "catastrophic engine failure" ? :dunno:

Either it's not as big an issue since Toyota's mentality seems to be "meh, don't worry about it" while some are replacing it at their own expense even if it's still working.

I guess I should also add an option for "Working as intended but replaced at own expense"

Cause when it fails it defaults to max setting on the pump it doesn’t stop pumping

We’re talking about a part that has less than a 1% failure rate. And when one does fail it defaults to high oil pressure so there is no “catastrophic engine failure”. I still can’t fathom why so many are so worried about this.

So, you just say hey, I think there’s like this really really really small chance my oil pump may fail how about you all replace it just in case? Did they think it was a joke?

For some reason I remember more of the fail to measure oil posts back in 2020 and 2021. Now in 2025 its suddenly a big deal??

True. I guess it' because us 2020/2021 owners are coming up on the end of our warranties?

I'm only trying to get a general consensus since it's a bipolar issue - "replace the plastic oil pump asap before it fails!" and "it's fine, don't worry about it"

I don't remember the fail to measure posts back then, but I do remember the 21's having the oil consumption issues. That was the predominant discussion. I haven't seen the plastic oil pump case come up until the last year or so. Not sure why since the metal replacement has been around since late 21.

Nah they basically just told me we can't do warranty work for something that hasn't failed yet, I gave them receipts of others that have had the problem with unable to read at 18% and other cases, but still the same answer.

I just want to get this over with if it ever happens.

Even if its only 1% chance, I'd rather have it done and not be worried at all then to have to deal with it.

Also default to high oil pressure, could you explain on that?

As far as I know the oil pump has a failsafe mode in which it gives you very high oil pressure. In my case, when it failed I was seeing abnormally high oil pressure, for example up to 115PSI on WOT or partial throttle. The car would also throw a code for this as a result.

Thanks for this. Yeah if it throws a code to me, this is something to worry about.

I just went thru this on my 2020. First indication is the engine oil level check. If it goes to 16% and then stops, that's an indicator that the oil pump is having issues. I did not receive any CEL warnings, but did get a low oil warning once which started me researching and trying the engine oil check, which failed at 16%. When I brought mine into the dealer I explained what the issue was, they talked to a Toyota engineer and he had them do a pressure test. It defaulted to the high pressure and thus was a failure for the test.

They then replaced the oil pump under warranty. This Toyota dealer also owns a BMW dealer so they sent it to them to replace the pump. Took just over 2 weeks total time.

If your engine oil check is failing at 16% bring it into the dealer. If not then no need to worry, but know if it does start to act up and your out of warranty, you'll spend about $2500 to fix it.

As for the other actual recalls, those aren't important at all really. The brake one.... you have to NOT press the brake pedal hard enough and then double tap the start/stop button. Who double taps the button... almost no one. The other is for 4G signals, who cares. My dealer specifically told me not to do the recalls because they have had several bricked ECU's when attempting these recalls.
