BMW S-series engines were built as the high-performance engines for the M series, as far as I know. The S15 in the E30 M3 (could be wrong), the S50 in the E36 M3, the S54 in the E46 M3, the S65 for the E92 M3...

The important one is the B58, which was found in the M140i, the M240i, the 340i, the 440i, the 540i, the 640i, the 740i/Li, and the X3 M40i. Basically, it's BMW's 40i engine for now.
The S58, "the performance edition", is slated to arrive in early 2019.
And supposedly, the Z5 will be based off of the "half-M" models, because it is a modular performance BMW after all.
Anyone see the connection?

Toyota.. hope u still have a pulse .. check this out

Can we expect you (Toyota) to ever understand what it really means to understand the market? You make money in all the appliances you make.. make one to give back to the community that make u successful.

If not leave the Supra RIP.

I saw that this morning too and thought it was quite on point, but I don't think marketing will be swayed that easily.

No matter what they do, the car will sell. Will the 2% of their enthusiast customer base buy them? Maybe not, but people who want to seem like they're cool sports car drivers probably will. I think Toyota also knows that the enthusiasts will get ahold of these cars 2nd hand and strip them back down to their intended weight and crank up the power, so everyone basically wins at that point (in their book). They get their asking price, and we, eventually, get the Supra we want (if we can get a swapped manual to work). Even if they sell it in this bloated trim, the aftermarket will make it look like a performance monster in no time, so Toyota will keep its reputation in tact, with a slight blemish of not having a manual option from the factory that 98% of their customers don't even question.

Basically, nice video, but I don't think it's news to them. They've run the numbers and will determine whether or not it matters based on a simple calculation.

Maybe I missed this in the prior 45 pages, but isn't the BMW Z4 slated to have a manual trans? IF that's the case, wouldn't it make sense to offer the same manual trans for the supra or worst case scenario swap one into it?

That there at all is a manual is the most important thing. It means a swap is fairly easy. Any BMW 6MT from the N54/N55/S55/B58/S58(?) should bolt on. It also means there is all the other hardware and requirements necessary, like clutch pedal, shifter location etc....

Try converting a Lexus RC to manual!

The argument is that potential BRZ/86 owners specifically said it had to have a manual (unanimously), as where those they interviewed for the Supra said that it was not the deciding factor in buying the car (instead, inline 6, tunability, and speed were emphasized).

That's the reason why I'm actually am super curious to see how the car sells because I can check that against the internal targets and forecasts and then comment.
