I recently purchased a 2023 MT, and took it in to a mechanic for it's first oil change under my watch. (EDIT: not a fulltime BMW tech, Independent European mechanic)... Sorry for the misleading phrasing.

They said " Oil is leaking out of the oil filler cap. Possible that the crankcase pressure is to high. Slight leak starting at the right rear timing chain tensioner. "

I'm looking for context, information, phrasing, approaches with the service department of my local Toyota dealer to get it looked at, and dealt with under warranty. I'm afraid they'll either claim it's normal an charge me for "inspection time"....

Are these known issues, and if so how does Toyota deal with these? How freaked out should I be?

Thanks everyone!!

I'm assuming you didn't buy the car new, and unless the BMW tech themselves wiped the valve cover, those stains look like someone simply spilled a few drops on the cover and wiped them off during a previous oil change. Hardly unusual.

If this person is a full-time BMW tech, this would be one of hundreds or even thousands of B58s they've serviced, so they should damn well know what is and isn't normal to see on them...

Ah, i fixed the post, it wasn't a BMW tech at a BMW dealer, but rather the independent mechanic lots of porsche/beamer people use in my town.

*Edit*: added some clarification
I agree about the possible 'spilled some drops" by the filler, (although the tech said, if it wasn't under warranty, i'd suggest putting a manometer on it to test operating pressure).

but the other one is concerning... The tech said "leaking crush washer?" and def thinks i should take it in under warranty, which I agree with.. I was hoping to arm myself with exactly the right words/context from this community before dealing with the service manager so it goes as well as possible... I friggin hate dealing with dealerships...

Thanks for the feedback.

Lol, good idea. I don't know why i had this "preserve the evidence" mentality.

although I *think* i can't see the rear timing chain tensioner without putting it on jackstands...

Non thrilling conclusion, Service Dept recommendation,

BLUF: dealer says it was sloppy oil change.

The dealer (LHM in Albuquerque) experience was a pretty good. I called and said "I want to make sure I bring it in when your supra tech is available" and she said "Oh, of course.." so I thought this is going well.. and then she said "I can't find a SUPER in the system, what kind of car is it again, and is tell her SupRA... and she still can't find it. Can I speak to your manager?

The Service manager was actually GREAT. we talked for a while, he said "ask for me when you drop it off." he did say they would probably want it for a couple days. (they had it mon->thur)

When I dropped it off monday, he immediately took it back and put it on the lift and looked at it, and said "I think it's just spilled oil from an oil change, but we'll take a more thorough look."

Anyway, they cleaned it up, put UV dye in the engine oil, drove it, let it sit, inspected, etc and no leaks detected... and gave it back, but he did call twice over that time to give updates, didn't try to charge me anything, and no damage to the car, so I'll call it a 5/5 Service experience..

I'll keep popping a UV light in their once a month to see if anything shows up.
