Hey people! Just wanted to create a thread to see if there are other very highly modified Supras with a ton of miles as well as discussing my ownership more in-depth compared to my video. 4 years with my car now and 87.7K miles on the odometer as of the writing of this post. Definitely my favorite car that I've ever owned. Had an FK8 Type R before this and I've had multiple STis (I need a doctor), WRX, Outback, S2000, and others I'm forgetting. The MK5 checks a majority of the boxes for a car I was looking for back then and still checks the boxes to this day.

Not sure what you guys were cross shopping the Supra with, but I got mine on November 2020 and this was before the prices for cars in general shot up. I crossed shopped the Supra with the cars below and I'll list the reason why I marked that car off my list:

  • Audi RS3: Love the DAZA platform, but couldn't get over how pedestrian the car looks. I knew I would modify the car and I wanted to add a big wing to it and a wing just looks goofy on it.
  • Nissan R35 GTR: One of my buddies ended up getting the exact spec I was hunting for and I did not want to copy him. White 2015 FBO E85 Black Edition. The dated interior was also a turn off for me
  • Corvette C7 Z06 (MT and AT): Drove both drivetrains and really liked them. Loved the supercharger whine and the ability to take the top off. Marked it off the list because I did not want to hang out with a bunch of old dudes with New Balances.
  • Audi R8 (V8): Not mod friendly. A freaking turbo kit to just push 600-700whp was going to cost up to $40K+.
  • BMW F80 M3: I love how they look and love how practical they are. Turn off for me was the sound of the car with a catless system.

Some of you might disagree with my points above, but those are my reasons. Looking back at my decision back then, I definitely made the right choice. I was actually trying to buy a white launch edition in OKC before I got mine, but one of the local dealerships would not sell it to me without some stupid $15k markup (looking at you Bob Howard Toyota). I knew that I was being "that customer" by saying I would buy the car if they just took the markup off, but I meant it. Oh well, I made a better decision with buying this particular car that I now own. Ended up finding it on Facebook Marketplace and I still keep in touch with the previous owner!

Bought the car with 62xx miles. Told the previous owner, James, that I would drive the FUCK out of the car and put it on YouTube and that's exactly what I did. I am one example and this car has been amazing for me not just driving it, but meeting all the fine folks in the community around the world. Ownership has not been perfect though, but all of the issues that I've had has been related to something that I have modified on the car.

The bad:

  • Broke axles twice (once at the track and once because the hub/axle bolt snapped)
  • Top mount boost issues related to me not plumbing the vacuum lines properly from the boost controller to the wastegate
  • One of the solenoids failed on my transmission (stock, unrelated to the built trans)
  • Misfiring because I did not swap out the sparkplugs (back when I had my Pure 800 setup)
  • Fuel line got loose for the secondary LPFP (original system I had put in was a stop gap just to get my car tuned)
  • Stupid ass brake wear sensor

All in all, very minor stuff and iAutowork and Applied Torque Solutions local to me got me sorted out and back on the road. Car still whoops ass and will continue getting driven all over the US and the world (hopefully). Here's my video that will go live this coming Friday (12/6/24) and some pictures from the early days of my ownership and what it looks like now.

What was your symptom when your Solenoid failed? And which Solenoid was it?

Im having a problem now with my auto trans where the 1-2 shift is violently jerky almost like there is air in the system, but the car has 2,500 miles on it....The 2nd gear is fine if I start off in second, no slipping or anything...very strange.

Mine wouldn't switch gears out of park. Symptoms prior to it happening was that the car would shudder when driving it then going into park.

If you're stock, maybe resetting the TCU would do the trick?

Hell yea, you'll rip it to 100k in no time. Two cars I'd consider have Audi's 5 cylinder...the 8Y RS3 and the TTRS. I did look at C8s but the price was higher than I liked and the rear design is just a little off. Let me know if you're ever in town and want to grab a bite. Cuz I like to eat, not a date lol.

Hi Vince. I just commented the same questions on your video, but I’ll hear too in case anyone else might be wondering the same. I just was hoping you could elaborate on your spark plug issue when you went pure 800? I want to do the same within the next year and nobody has mentioned needing to upgrade spark plugs. Also, what was the issue with your brake wear sensors?

Thanks,
Janner

I bought my supra a few months ago and couldn't agree more with your reasons here. I thought the M cars look like traffic, C8 wasn't available in manual, and Porsches were the same price for something that was 10 years old. Bought a Supra and haven't looked back and have been loving every moment

Great youtube content Vince. Give us a photo shoot of your cylinder bores in 4k as well :p
Oh for sure lol

C8s have crazy performance, but I cannot get over the looks 3 years later. I mean I like to be wined and dined, but I'll have to check with my wife first ?

Hey Janner, I responded on the video, but I'll put it here for visibility also.

Spark plugs, I just didn't swap them out when I should have. Ended up causing misfires, but I swapped them out the same day and no issues since. Had too many miles on the original ones.

I am running OEM VW plugs now actually. Can't remember the gap, but the part # is 06M-905-606-F. Completely compatible with the B58 and a fraction of the price of OEM BMW plugs.

Brake wear sensors, the ones I put on my car won't sync to the car so I have the annoying "BRAKE" light. Different from the "PARK" light when the e-brake is on.

Yeah I very briefly looked into Porsches, but I told myself if I ever was to buy one for myself, then it would be either a 992 GT3, any generation GT3RS, or GT4RS. Not going to settle for anything else. Those are the only cars that would make me get rid of my Supra.

I gotcha. Ok thanks for the info Vince.

Great writeup, Vince. I've watched and commented in some of your videos, and will watch the one you posted here.
My Supra is still very young with around 5000 miles on it. The vehicles I considered before buying this 45th Anniv. edition were:
Lotus Emira: I had a $3000 deposit on one but became very disappointed with all of the problems owners in the UK were having. The drivetrain (Toyota V6 with Edelbrock supercharger) is solid , but everything else appeared not to be.
2017 - 2019 Acura NSX: Probably the most reliable exotic out there, but even used versions are still very costly.
2018 - 2019 McLaren 570S: I had rented a 2019 for a day and was very, very impressed until I saw the monthly payments, even years later.
2017-2018 MX5 ND with Edelbrock supercharger shortly after purchase: Nice bang for the buck but not fast enough.

Then one of our forum members (Jayce) agreed to stop by and let me drive his Supra. After that, I was convinced that a new one was then at the top of my list. The rest is history.
