Are stock intakes better than cold air intakes?

Anyone know if the FTP intake pipe fits in to the MST turbo inlet? Seems stock airbox is the way to go. So I'll probably just replace these pipes and get a snorkel intake. Honestly all three of those pretty much add up to the cost of one CAI anyways so seems to monetarily more efficient too. ?

Are you talking about this? If so, no. It replaces everything except for the inlet bolted to the turbo.

I'm running the FTP intake pipe with OEM intake. Fits and works great.

So correct me if I'm wrong, then your turbo inlet is the stock one? Or does the FTP replace that too? Hope that's not a dumb question lol.

The one in the photo is the Pure Turbo inlet, but it has the exact same connection to the inlet pipe as OEM.

I would love to see the data if you do happen get a snorkel. It definitely helps keeping the temp creep down. Before my DIY snorkel, I couldn't break under 121F w/ 100 ambient. After the install, I was able to see 11X numbers. I can't even imagine what numbers you'll see with your setup.

I have the Injen EVO 2300, but the AFE Takeda and AMS are also the same basic design.

Do these actually mate up with the stock snorkel? Anyone seeing IATs over stock with these setups?

They mate right up with the snorkel, yes. As far as IATs I can't personally confirm, so maybe someone else here can.

At first, I thought it was just me but others felt a drop in performance after I installed my CTS intake. It has a tall metal heat shield but the filter isn't really protected behind it. So then I decided to install the Verus heat shield and I felt a little return in power. Might have been a placebo effect or something...

Anyways, just prior to buying the Verus heat shield, I was pretty convinced that I was going to put my stock airbox back in with a K&N drop-in filter and do the resonator delete to sound like the cool kids. I'm staying with this setup until I move onto the next level with my power setup (i.e. RP 65 Omega turbo kit).

Hood scoop/vent, fender vents, snorkel, upgraded intake manifold, or a combination of these will keep your IAT's down and improve performance.

I have the same CTS CAI and was feeling the car sluggish but happy with how it sounds thou.
Ill definitely look into buying the Verus heatshield.

BTW since I'm here did any you guys uninstall the cable by accident that is connected to the lower part of the CAI?? I did and my finger barely fit and not sure if i connected it back correctly as I didn't hear a click. Hoping it doesn't do anything bad to the engine.

Mighty Car Mods did a 'cash vs trash' video that showed intakes are a losing proposition on most cars. Intakes are an upgrade when you remove restrictive filters or open up flow on a car that suffers from an underfed turbo (Evo X). On the A90 it seems like the airflow is not a major restriction unless you're upgrading from the stock turbo.

IMHO, the primary benefit of an intake on this car is that it makes cool noises. If you're increasing turbo size or engine displacement, you will need to suck more air. If you're replacing the factory intake in the same location, it's a bit much to expect a performance increase. Unless Toyota spent millions of dollars on a bad design and are running a super rich map, what problem does an aftermarket intake solve?

Yeah if I would have know this before I installed mine, I wouldn’t have messed with it. But since I did, you are right, I can hear is whoosh a bit more. I have a MST with the see through cover. It’s kinda cool looking I suppose. And the replacement filter is cheap:

I'm on the fence about keeping my stock intake vs. getting an aftermarket one (probably HKS with their closed carbon box if so). If I do the resonator delete, I know I can get a little more sound out of the stock box but is there anything else you can do to increase the turbo noises with the stock intake?

I'm about to pull the trigger on an AA catted downpipe and SP1R exhaust. Anybody with this setup running a stock intake?
