Would going bigger and WIDER be advised? Thinking of going 20" 275/295 setup for the front and rear 10" wide in the front and 11" in the rear. Still on the fence if I buy the wider wheels if I should step up to a 285/305

Thanks for your input
By bigger, it looks like you mean a bigger rim (using wheel = tire + rim), and wider refers to a wider tire?

I've heard people say that 275/35/19 can rub a bit in the front. Based on that, 285 should probably rub, and since tires for 20" rims will be bigger overall than the equivalent tire for a 19" rim, they'll probably also rub if you go 285.

I really don't know about 305s on 20" wheels. Maybe, maybe not? It's cutting it close.

Edit: lots of things to consider -- hopefully this article explains better than I can: https://carphrases.com/pros-and-cons-of-using-bigger-wheels-on-a-car/

Also, what's your aim with the car? Tracking, shows, daily, drag racing, something else? Your answer will change how you should approach "what wheels should I get?"

most of my driving is commuting sad to say. I like to have fun on the weekends, with the semi occasional track day or hard session of roll racing.

I hope to take the car to modest levels of power (450-500) and do plenty of technical driving as well as roll racing. I found the stock tires to lose traction anything past the stock power level (especially on launch). And cornering in them is lack luster grip.

no problems sliding in them… but that’s not the objective most of the time.

I’ve seen people recommend wider and taller wheels, to balance the issues with going taller only. Either way seems like 275/295 setup is the most the stock wheels can handle, and pushing that on the 20” wheels won’t yield better results for fitment.

Sounds like you're in a similar situation to me, but in Texas, where the weather is more conducive for running summers all year.

I'd maybe stick with 19" wheels and bump up the tire widths to 275/35/19 and 295/35/19 on Michelin PS4Ses or Super Sports. That way, you'll have a little bit more cornering grip, less wheelspin on a launch, but still enough tread that you're not constantly buying replacements.

My setup is 265 and 295/35/19 on PS4S for the summer. I've got Titan7 TS-5 wheels, which are 9.5" and 11" (stock is 9" and 10", IIRC), so they require wider tires than stock, and I believe 5 pounds less per wheel for weight savings.

Thanks everyone for chiming in, great to have many contribute their experience to help new guys like me.

I will consider getting some 275/35/19 and 295/35/19 P4S tires on the stock wheels, since the consensus has been 20" wheels will be pushing it. I will just save the money and hold on to my stock wheels for now. May still upgrade in the future for 11" wide wheels in the rear, but jury still out between 19" and 20" diameter.

I must ask where do you guys buy and get your tires mounted? I have used Discount Tire in the past, but curious about Tire Rack or even a mobile service so I don't have downtime at work.

I would just say don’t limit yourself to just Tire Rack because they don’t necessarily have all available sizes for a given tire. For example, the RE71R is available in a whole slew of 19” sizes but Tire Rack only seems to have one narrow size.

Tire Rack for purchasing, but it's been a pain in the ass to find Michelins in stock from tire dealers. I used TR's mobile installer for some all-season Contis for winter, but I'm using a local place that's in walking distance for PS4S installation on TS-5s since the mobile installer is booked out for a while in the Seattle area.

Tires from tire rack, shipped to local BMW performance shop, mounted and balanced there. I just call the shop to let them know I’m sending some tires their way.
If avoiding downtime at work is a concern I’d just go with their mobile installer like zrk said

I've used Tread Connection for a mobile job once. There is a trip charge and they have different rates depending whether you supply tires or buy from them directly. They will price match tires.

Also a good way to determine if the tire will be grippy enough is to check the treadwear number. That is a good indicator on what to expect for grip.

For example Nitto NT555Rll has a rating of 100. Thats a very low number and expect to change them often but people use them repeatedly for the performance.

I currently have 285 35 19 R888R's and running 463hp/566tq, I definitely need more tire and wish I went with 305s. I am looking into getting 305 NT05Rs or the 555R2's, I am at the 1/8th or 1/4m drags most of the time. I think I will end up settling on the NT05Rs based on the feedback and availability atm. I have been able to get a 1.68 60ft on the R888Rs but mostly hitting 1.7s consistently, have to baby it off the line and want to be able to give it full throttle.
