I made a previous post about what I thought was a battery problem. I finally had my car towed to Toyopet(a branch of Toyota) and they said they have tried all diagnostic checks on it. It’s not the battery, reset the computer etc and nothing is working. They said this happened to a similar Supra and when they replaced the starter it worked. But they are saying that might not fix it also and I have to pay 120,000 yen for the part plus labor. There’s all electronics if the car is turned over but it just won’t crank. Has anyone had any similar issue? It’s really stressful as the car has 4000kms and I’ve only driven it like 600kms since buying it used. Because of the muffler and being lowered, Toyota is technically not allowed to look at it but this is a friendly dealership with my companies dealership.
Your dealer is an idiot. You take your car to a professional for a professional diagnosis not a stab in the dark at your expense. Any clown can stick their finger in the air and say" starter motor". On top of that they can remove it and get it tested for little cost. Hell any decent mechanic can usually diagnose a starter failure on the bench 8 times out of ten.
I'm not sure I'd try the old bridge the starter contacts or hook the battery direct on a modern car. Better to remove it and do that on the bench.

Thanks for this. About to tackle it myself tonight. Wonder if that "non-reusable part" (referenced black dot in 1st image) needs to be replaced. oh well.

so i swapped out the starter. car works like a charm again. had to remove the metal shield that covered the oil plug, disconnected the two wires, removed 3 screws (E10) and swapped. had to watch some random 2020+ X5 starter motor video to really get a look at where i'm going (there aren't any supra starter tutorials that i found). bought a used starter off of ebay for 200 and did it myself. would be a super fast job the second time around.

Ive never had a problem with the car since replacing the starter. Must have just been a lemon to go out after 4000kms

So I'm old school... I shift into neutral if I am coming to a light. I even have bimmercode/link set to remember my last Auto start/stop as OFF.

As much as I think the engineers maybe added some level of durability to the modern starters these days, starting the car 10-20-50 times a day if in traffic is just going to toast that thing.

Plus shifting into neutral can give the transmission back a few thousand miles of life.
