Hi guys,

Found a nice ‘21 with 9K on the OD.
Great condition - was about to work on a deal - pulled up the carfax and it was a lemon dealer buyback for an oil consumption issue. Supposedly “fixed” and now reposted for sale.

Any one have any experience with this type of situation? Oil consumption issues scare me and remind me of my BMW days. How would this be “fixed” - new engine?

Thanks for any thoughts!

The B58 engine is known to consume oil... Surprised that it's been "fixed".

You will likely get it for cheaper since it's a lemon title, but your resale won't be great...because it's a lemon title.

I'm not scared of oil consumption personally. My wife's old 2002 VW Jetta we had to top off with oil monthly. If the price was right I'd consider it, possibly even more if it was tuneable. You should also still have 20k left on the warranty.

I looked it up on their site and they have it for $54,555. Put in more leg work and get a 2022 3.0 Premium for just a little more or a new 3.0 for the same. Not worth it unless you can get it for a lot less.

95% of the oil consumption is normal, but there are some that are very much so abnormal. This one was probably one of those rare few

The 'wisdom' around here is the 2021 is worse for oil consumption. If you have a friend at any Toyota or possibly a BMW dealer you can get the service records for this car. You can probably find out what the issue was. It is likely it was someone who never owned a car with this motor and freaked when it actually USED OIL LOL> OMG.

Yes the off chance is it was one that might have used oil more than BMW's motor specs allowed. If so then the MOTOR was probably replaced. Id buy it if thats the case. If you plan on keeping it who cares if they put a BRAND NEW MOTOR in it. If thats all it was then thats not a big deal. Motor's actually get replaced. Its a part.

My 12 GTi in Germany had cyl#4 spark plug destroy the electrode and the associated cylinder. No problem selling it. NEW Motor! Specific failure and factory/dealer records. Do the research as this is probably a decent car. More so than plenty others that have been tuned and abused by not so great owners. If its clean and the only issue was the oil issue and you are good with keeping it for a while and can document what was done - get it. Thorough test and inspection first!

A lemon buy back holds the same weight as a rebuilt title, it should be valued accordingly. many of these are being bought back for consumption issues, it is an easy fix, using heavier weight oil will get rid of it entirely, but the issue is if the motor has already been stared at one point. At the price they are asking, go buy a brand new 2022 for similar money or just find a 2020 and go from there. at 54.995 this is a terrible, terrible deal.

Wager: 21 is "worse" for oil consumption because 0W20 has the consistency of fucking bath water, and 21s run higher average boost PSI, thus making it more likely that shitty thin oil will burn off.

But, sure, let's keep using that minimum-grade xW20 because Toyota "recommends it."

Thanks guys. Totally agree that this price is laughable. Was considering seeing how much “flexibility” they had.

I’m thinking new is the better route as well.
Exactly. If they were priced at 49k then it's a buy. But at 54k it's a joke. Lemon and salvage while different are synonymous when valuing the vehicle.

I fixed my oil consumption issue with some Motul 300v 5w30.

The car is at Jidd Motors... ya i'd never buy a car from them. Had a buddy buy an STI from them a few years back and he said it was the biggest nightmare to deal with them about everything. Heard from numerous people to never go there.

Definitely pass.

I just sold a 2021 BMW M240I 6sp manual with a bit over 9k miles. It has the same engine, B58 as the Supra. During my entire 14 months of ownership the car never burn any oil. This "oil consumption" issue with the 2021 Supra actually worries me a bit as I am looking at getting a Supra with a manual transmission(understand it is coming out either in late 2022 or 2023).

The comments on using a heavier weight oil is not really a fix, but rather a bandage to the problem whether it is the lesser tension rings they used, or something else. So far, I believe no one really knows the actual cause of oil consumption.

The ridiculous markups by dealers are just "GREED". I can't imagine anyone would pay those markups. It is just a car. No one "NEEDS" a car like this. It is all about "WANTS". For example: SF Toyota has a A91-CF edition that has a msrp of $65,500. Its mark up on this vehicle is 10K, bringing the total cost to $75,500. This type of practice will put off a lot of potential customers, me included.

With the new Z coming Toyota almost has to make a manual transmission available to compete. I know I will be looking at the Z when it comes out.

i don’t think the F22 M240 is the exact same engine set up as the Supra, is it? Especially not the 2021- model year Supra? Considering the HPFP is different, etc. the N52 si engines had different oil consumption from the non -si versions, so lots of variables at play besides the fundamental engine block.

That said, I can understand your concern . I once had a bmw with high oil consumption which was within official spec, but no mechanic (outside of a dealership) would say it was all good. Too many possible underlying variables when it comes to oil consumption, and not enough of a deep dive analysis to each case.
