The engine allows a higher rev before actually shifting which is a big contributor to the difference. Go for a light cruise from 20 to 50 in sport vs normal and watch the shift point change if you’re just slowly acceleratingI've been wondering this for quite some time now.
Is there really a difference between Sport mode and Normal mode in gas mileage if the transmission is set to normal? What does Engine set to sport do to affect gas mileage?
Good question. RPM kills mileage and the trans in sport mode really prolongs the time you spend in the lower gears.. If you set up sport mode but leave trans in normal mode mileage differenceshould be minimal.I've been wondering this for quite some time now.

How does one leave the trans in normal mode while the car is in sport?Good question. RPM kills mileage and the trans in sport mode really prolongs the time you spend in the lower gears.. If you set up sport mode but leave trans in normal mode mileage differenceshould be minimal.
Go into individual sport settings..How does one leave the trans in normal mode while the car is in sport?
This is with the transmission in sport mode. When the transmission is in normal mode there isn't any difference I can tell between shifting points, but lets say i'm shifting manually.. Is there anything sport mode does to the engine apart from opening up the exhaust valve? The engine allows a higher rev before actually shifting which is a big contributor to the difference. Your steering has more weight to it, the suspension firms up, and the throttle is far more sensitive, for starters. The more sensitive throttle response can also contribute to decreased MPG.This is with the transmission in sport mode. Didn't know you could look up other people's stats. Cool!I just got 36.6 mpg driving from St Louis to West Allis. I did mostly 73 mph on the way back. I did mostly 77 mph on the way there and got 28.4 mpg.
