Overall, in person I get mostly compliments and people taking pictures. However, at the track I think I hurt some feelings and had some guy complaining about 'a** h**** running on street tires ruining the track for the 'real racers'' as he looked over at me, then he felt the need to tell me that 'it's always the imports that break and sorry but you bought the wrong car it's going to break'

To which I replied 'Oh so domestics NEVER break?' He straight faced said 'Never.'
So I gave him an 'oKaY SuRE tHeY dONt' while making a face and some suggestive hand motions.
He then tried to challenge me to a race with his 'street car' that supposedly runs '8.5s'.

Needless to say I declined, like sorry bro I'm only here for my baseline runs this is bone stock I'm here for FUN. Where did the bad imports touch you when you were younger?

99.99% of my experience has been positive -- I've had people complimenting that car in all sorts of scenarios -- drive-thrus, gas stations, pulled up at stop lights. I get looks from most imported cars (Evos, R35 GTRs, Ferraris, Mercs, Porsches) and they all love it.

The only hate this car gets is online from keyboard warriors and from those who would probably go and hide in a corner if you counter their "nice BMW" with "what do you drive?"

I've also felt a general sense of apathy from muscle car owners, don't know why.
I thought general apathy just went along with the stereotypical muscle car owner?? ;)

Almost always positive comments and interactions with the car. Have had the car since December 2019, still get people that'll come up and ask about it and still get the "this is the first one I've seen".

There have been a few negative interactions over that time, usually the same tired BMW comments. Most recent is leaving C&C this past weekend. Overheard a group of kids say it's not a real Supra, it's just a Z4. Probably walking back to their shitboxes they parked down the street, usually how it goes. Right after that though, a few more positive compliments from people as I waited in line to leave.

For the most part though, experience has been like others here where most of the negative stuff is online. Hardly ever in person.

I am experiencing deja vu with this one.

Overall I have received more praise, thumbs up, stares, and incognito cell phone snaps from others than any other car I have owned.

However, I went to a local burger/ice cream place the other day and had a similar experience. The two teenage guys at the drive through window went crazy and were enamored with the car, but then another guy in the kitchen asked then what they were going nuts over. They tell him and he proceeds to just start talking sh*t about how it's not even a Supra, that they should check out all the BMW logos under the hood, etc. It was super obnoxious.

Since I had to pull up and wait for part of my order, the kid that came out and handed my my bag was nice enough to say he loved the car.

All of my drive-thru experiences have been positive... from the guy in front of me getting out of his minivan to take a selfie with it, to dozens of positive comments at the window.

Funniest one was my local Jack drive-thru... guy didn't say anything for about 20 seconds - then just said "That Supra is so clean! That's been my dream car since they announced it. You must be really rich, right?"

That stumped me a bit (since I certainly don't consider myself rich and I looked like a bum at the time). However, I found it ironically humorous considering I'd seen him several times when I had my RC-F and the Cayman before that... and this was the first time he said anything to me! I'm pretty sure the color plays a major factor in that though.

One of my neighbors said something similar to me the first time he saw it... I found that ridiculous considering he was hooking his giant boat up to his new Navigator at the time. He probably lost more in depreciation on the way to the lake than my car cost out the door.

Yeah I've got that vibe from them. "Must only maintain rivalry with other American brands and ignore all else". I'd put $5 they'd scoff at an HSV GTS-R pulling up alongside.

I’ve only put 1,400 miles on my Supra since late December, but I have almost a story a day of complements, praise, and enthusiastic questions.

Today was interesting. I went to get gas at the station nearest the house and there was a Corvette rally there. C8s through C2s. Pumping gas, two guys came over and I though “oh, here it comes.” They had nothing but praise and complements. Talked for 30 min.

Last time I got gas, I guy pulled in and had me take a photo of him next to my car.

Guy in a Golf R (very respectable “car guy” car) chased me down and caught me at a light last week to ask questions. Had to go through three lights doing that.

People work to get along side of me just to wave or give the thumbs-up.

The supermarket is ridiculous. Had people waiting to chat on two occasions.

I try to be a good ambassador, even if I’m in a hurry. NOT 1 instance of criticism or hate; that seems to be largely from internet armchair warriors.

Not sure if y’all get the same? It’s definitely NOT the driver in my case.
Not me. Must be nice to be good looking..

I wouldn't worry too much about the kids. Them thinking the Supra is a Z4 tells me they read the brochure, no more. Coupes are very different animals from convertibles, and that's without going into the tuning changes Toyota made on the platform.

They're probably also the types who would be like "Mk4 is a true Supra since it's 100% Japanese", not knowing the Getrag transmission is German.

In person, nothing but compliments and constructive conversations about the choices Toyota made, no silly hate.

Oh yeah, doesn't bother me at all. I find it kinda funny that they still try to shit on the car despite what people are doing with the platform. Tells me all I need to know about them.

End of the day, I'm really enjoying the car and that's all that matters to me. Does what I want it to and I love it more and more each time I take it out on track.

It is really disappointing. Were the mk3 owners such shitheads when the mk4 came out, or is this case unique because it’s been 20 years?
No, the Supra line never received this weird type of 'hate'. I think I kinda feel like I have a little insight into why the MKV has been received in certain circles this way, my step kid (he's 21 now) grew up watching FnF movies with his bio-dad and became enamored with the MKIV. During that time I was racing MX then got into SCCA Time Trails and AX in my late 40's. To me a car or bike is a tool for racing, for him a car evokes a fond childhood memory which the MKV will never be able to fulfill. So he talks crap on it, makes fun of the fake diffuser which he knows bothers me too, and tells me how much better the Mustang GT500 is. I think those who grew up with the MKIV as a dream car for them (from the FnF movies) will always have issues with the MKV, and that group is very vocal on line, and very cancel culture-y.

Other than that I receive nothing but complements from people. I'm coming off a 1991 Porsche 911 which gets WAY more attention than the Supra, and even at one car meet some guy walks buy it and say's to his friend, "Volkswagen bug, haha". So I guess this happens at some level with every car.

Oh well, nobody will receive an ounce of hate on their car from me regardless of what it is!

I finally got a "You know it's just a BMW?" last night. It was a kid, probably late teens/early 20s. He was super friendly, and we talked about it for a while. I went over the whole, "it's really fun to drive, so I don't really care what badges say" sort of thing.

The one thing I don't understand - I've always been a BMW fan, driven many of them over the years, it _almost_ comes off as a compliment. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

People who don't know cars real well tend to point out my car is black. Thanks for confirming.. I'm not color blind.

I often open with “you know it’s the product of a collaboration between Toyota and BMW that was absolutely brilliant!” That makes it tough to snidely say “it’s justa BMW.”

I was 16-17 when the first F&F movie came out in 2001, I was the target demographic of that movie. I loved it, and I loved the MKIV, I still do. I get all of the dream car, childhood memories arguments, but the MKV doesn't detract from that any more than modern muscle cars detract from classic firebirds or chargers from Smokey and the Bandit or The Dukes of Hazzard.

The MKIV and MKV are different cars, they can both be good and you can appreciate them both without compromising anything. Plus the B58 is a beast. 3.0L sleeved, closed deck I6 with piston oil squirters, direct injection, and variable valve timing and lift? If ever there was a worthy successor to the 2JZ, this is it IMO.

Exactly!

Does anyone remember when Star Wars Episode 1 came out??? All the hate it received from the generation that grew up watching Episodes 4-6, while younger generations couldn't care less......just like I couldn't care less about the F&F series and the MkIV.

The MkV is a sexy looking modern sports car and affordable enough thanks to the BMW/Toyota joint venture, period.
