he has to abide by stuff and make excuses for stuff that comes down from above. sadly, that paints him in a negative light...

Accounting: hey, we ran the numbers and manual doesn't look profitable
Safety R&D/compliance: hey, this car has to have TSS/AEB
Akio: this car has be very fast to maintain Supras reputation; make it as fast as a porsche
Marketing: we want all of these options or this car wont sell, polls tell us so

Supra = "PURE SPORTSCAR" so they say...(Toyota)

If you focused paneled a group of 100 car enthusiast and asked them one simple question...

Which would have greater affect on your buying decision if we were to build a new Supra?

Toyota Safety Sense or a Manual Transmission?

I can almost guarantee Manual would take priority over the latter!

TSS should be on the back burner, and Manual should be on the Grill !

I totally understand and appreciate that; but thats also his job no? >_<

Also don't forget about the most important persona here:

The actual Customer: "Please please build it with a manual too".

"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced today that 20 automakers have agreed to make automatic emergency braking (AEB) standard by September 1st, 2022, representing "more than 99 percent" of the US auto market."

Toyota likely agreed to this as well. Therefore, if they want the car to abide by standards which may become law in 5-6, 10 years...they need to have AEB and other aspects of TSS.

Considering how long the car would be in in regards to a generation, you know damn well this thing will have to abide by then. They can't avoid it. The only way this would work is if toyota made an exclusive manual option the first year, and fuck all else every year since, meaning the manual supra will be having high resale if it is anything like its past successor

I'm going to preface this with the fact that I totally understand Toyota's stance and that from a business point of view it probably makes good sense.

That said, if TSS is such a big priority for customers, offer it, even standard, on AT models and offer MT models without it. Then customers get to choose.

Toyota will never let their halo model have anything less than the best safety systems.

Disappointing but it makes perfect sense from an auto manufacturing market perspective.

Curious as to where the 20% came from... I realise they said the global market is dominated by US buyers.... how many US buyers buy their 911 in manual? Their 86/BRZ? I feel if you're benchmarking Porsche, who still offer a manual trans and acknowledge the "feel" of the vehicle dynamics... perhaps a manual should have been considered also, not just lap times.

"At the moment 85 percent of Porsche’s global 911 production comes equipped with the PDK automatic, although that figure is trending downward of late."

Toyota doesn't scream enthusiasts to the public at large you know. People will be like, oooh, shiny, I'll take it!

Then that's it.

I believe for cars like the 86 and M2 it is about 50%.

yeah, for some cars it's much higher take rate based on enthusiast pool. the 20% take rate is probably due to all of the older folks that will buy this car and much to the dismay of everyone on this board will be the other 80% with enough money to purchase one new lol

hmmm, i think it's different down here... manuals are more popular. let me find some numbers. shame to hear automatics are so popular abroad though. I guess the "i can't drive stick" memes were real :(

As being currently employed with Porsche, I can tell you with certainty the amount of people buying 911's right now are well into there 40's and 50's. I would say it's 100% unfair to compare take rates from a 911 to that of what would be a Supra. Two different markets really.

Ya well, I'm quoting the figure from caranddriver. You could claim to be John Porsche himself hand building manual 911's in your garage in Stuttgart but unless you can site any sources I'm not inclined to believe you.
