So I've owned two 240z , one 280z, two 280zx in the first 6 years of my driving life. I loved them. The low slung feeling like you are sitting on top of that rear wheel.....the long hood....the straight six...the awesome lines of the car front to back. Those cars were fun to drive totally and I loved the feel they had.
Later on I was able to own a 03' 350z performance for 4 years, I loved that car too mostly because of the track days I did in it. I also owned a 370z as well for 4 years. However the low slung feeling with being on top of the rear wheels and long hood....were not there....I wasn't fooled by them making the door beltlines higher. The cars body lines were totally different too. I remember the first time sitting in a 350z and it felt more passenger car than sports car to me at the time. I still enjoyed the heck outta my 350z/370z cars though.
The 350z is approaching 20 years old now! Holy cow....so I wonder how many see the 350z as the "classic Z". I wonder how many are using the 350z as the reference point when they look at the new Z. When I look at the new Z I see the same structure the 350z and 370z had....which to me is distant from the early Z cars.
A year ago when I test drove the Supra I noticed right away that low slung feel was all right there like the classic Z cars had. The lines of the car over all were more reminiscent of the classic Z vs the squatting frog turtle look of the 350/370. When I drive the Supra...it reminds me more of my 240z/280zx cars I grew up on than the 350z or 370z ever did.
Yea...the Supra is made my BMW...but it's got an excellent straight six.....it's built off a Z4 platform....but it's got that low slung classic Z feel....it's also delightfully fast and capable as modern sporty car should be. I don't care that it has the Toyota corporate "style" vents.....errr....accents. I've never let badges get in the way about what a car is or is not. The jury is still out on if Toyota is selling a real Supra or not....For me...they are selling a car that reminded me of those 240z I used to fire up to drive to school and college in the mornings. I've been enjoying the new Z for almost a year now and it's great!
