So I've owned two 240z , one 280z, two 280zx in the first 6 years of my driving life. I loved them. The low slung feeling like you are sitting on top of that rear wheel.....the long hood....the straight six...the awesome lines of the car front to back. Those cars were fun to drive totally and I loved the feel they had.

Later on I was able to own a 03' 350z performance for 4 years, I loved that car too mostly because of the track days I did in it. I also owned a 370z as well for 4 years. However the low slung feeling with being on top of the rear wheels and long hood....were not there....I wasn't fooled by them making the door beltlines higher. The cars body lines were totally different too. I remember the first time sitting in a 350z and it felt more passenger car than sports car to me at the time. I still enjoyed the heck outta my 350z/370z cars though.

The 350z is approaching 20 years old now! Holy cow....so I wonder how many see the 350z as the "classic Z". I wonder how many are using the 350z as the reference point when they look at the new Z. When I look at the new Z I see the same structure the 350z and 370z had....which to me is distant from the early Z cars.

A year ago when I test drove the Supra I noticed right away that low slung feel was all right there like the classic Z cars had. The lines of the car over all were more reminiscent of the classic Z vs the squatting frog turtle look of the 350/370. When I drive the Supra...it reminds me more of my 240z/280zx cars I grew up on than the 350z or 370z ever did.

Yea...the Supra is made my BMW...but it's got an excellent straight six.....it's built off a Z4 platform....but it's got that low slung classic Z feel....it's also delightfully fast and capable as modern sporty car should be. I don't care that it has the Toyota corporate "style" vents.....errr....accents. I've never let badges get in the way about what a car is or is not. The jury is still out on if Toyota is selling a real Supra or not....For me...they are selling a car that reminded me of those 240z I used to fire up to drive to school and college in the mornings. I've been enjoying the new Z for almost a year now and it's great!

I forgot to mention the Auto transmission dilemma as all my Zs were manual....I'm still having more fun in the Supra's auto than I should be. I did have a auto C7 Stingray that I drove for over 90k miles....going auto was a BIG FAT mistake in that car. In the Supra, sure I'd of bought a manual if it was offered...BUT...I'm not going to be trading in my 21' for a new manual version.

It seems like it's difficult to write about the new Z without the transmission "issue," which Toyota has "corrected" by releasing a manual version of the Supra. Everyone has their own priorities. I'm done owning three peddle cars. I feel more connected to the road and have more fun flipping a paddle and having it pop into gear than I do manipulating a manual transmission car... and I grew up driving manual transmission cars. What I'm most excited about now, though, is that we have two competing sports cars on the market with both manual and auto options. It's awesome to have choices and it's going to be awesome to have the Toyota boyz fighting the Nissan boyz for years to come with these cars.

In the late '70's I worked at a Port in VA where the Datsun's were unloaded from the ship. We drove them from there to the staging areas in preparation for loading on trucks. Always loved the looks of the 240. It reminded me of the 2000 GT or the Jaguar XKE with the long flowing lines and the hood that went on forever. Those looks are what what drew me to the MKV.

@YellowJacket , I know how you feel on this one.

OP, I can see where you're comin from. My first Supra was an 89 Turbo targa stick, and while I loved it, this new Supra would kick its ass in every performance measure. I've had several sports cars (Vettes, RX7s including Turbo, AMG Supercharged MB) and this Supra beats all of them. Part of that is technology and progress in general, but by whatever metric it's a helluva car.

In terms of styling, I've always gotten Dodge Viper vibes from the Supra.
Agreed. Saw a new Viper drive by yesterday and the body style with the bubble roof is very similar.

Lol i had an argument with this guy over on the "other" forum. He tried arguing that the Supra's design was more aggressive than the Viper. But like you guys said, i do see the Viper influence on the MKV's design, that's why i love it.

I had a 370Z for 8-9years before I sold it to a buddy of mine. When I sat in the GR Supra for the first time, it did kind of remind me of my old 370Z, but was so much nicer inside and side mirrors weren't so huge I can actually see over them when I sat deep in my relaxing GT-style driving position. Not having to have to lean forward is nice. And the power.. night/day faster in the GR Supra vs the NA VQ in the 370Z.

I'm a MT guy too, but as you might've seen, I prefer slower 4 banger turbo's for MT driving on street. It's just more fun. I don't mind driving my GR Supra with the ZF8. I think it's a great match for the engine and power. Heck the Supra is all about good looks and speed.. ZF is the proper tranny.
