I know oil change threads have been posted thousands of times, but I’ve read through almost all of them and couldn’t come to a definitive decision on oil changes after the break-in period.

Dealer is saying 10k miles for the first change, which doesn’t sound safe at all. I’ve seen answers for 1200 miles change, 5000 miles, 7500 miles.

Just wondering if there’s any new information regarding the first few changes
And how does Toyotacare come into play regarding early oil changes at the dealership?

Modern engines break in nearly instantly. You can change the oil early if you want but its not required. Modern oils and filters are very capable even during break in.

My Tacoma gets changed once a year usually around 8-9k miles. Supra will get changed once per year without any track days, with track days it will get changed after the 4th day most likely. Supra is a 3-5k a year car for me. All my new cars and bikes used factory oil change intervals from day one and none of them burned any oil, they were all used hard and put away wet as well. The only time I go shorter is with higher loads like lots of towing, off roading, track/race, road trip to mountain roads, etc.

If its a daily driven car I wouldnt hesitate to go 10k intervals with a quality oil. If you are worried get your oil tested and that will give you your OCI based on your usage.

10k is the factory spec, but obviously changing the oil at least every 5k will lead to a longer lasting engine.

Unless you are me, I burn 1qt of oil every 1000miles or so. By the time I hit 5k I replace every qt of oil in the engine. I will soon switch to 5w-30 and change filters though as I'm about 5k away from my 20k service at Toyota.

You're my doppelganger. I'm on this same schedule with both my Tacoma and Supra and I'm not having any issues with either. Oil testing results have shown healthy motors.

I did at 3,000 and then once a year for the remainder of my time with it. Usually about 3,000-3,500 a year

Depends on how you use it. Track use? 3000 miles. Day to day driving? Good quality oil 10k is no problem.

Going to be a daily with some spirited driving here and there. No track use planned. Does the factory GR oil constitute “good quality oil”?

You did your first change at 10k?

As far as Toyota care goes I had no trouble getting my oil change "early" at 3k miles and having it be covered.

No, I'm not at 10k yet and I track the car. However, if I were daily driving my Supra with no track time I wouldn't have an issue letting it go that long, personally. Assuming I piled up that many miles within the first year. I did my first at 3k-ish at about the end of the first year of ownership.

1st oil change was at 1500 miles. 2nd was at 6000. 3rd will be whatever miles I have on it after another year, so probably 4000-5000 miles.

Do the oil certifications matter much or is it all just for warranty? I don’t believe the 5w30 is C5 SN
Yes. They matter more than the viscosity. To my understanding they have to do with the particular additives in the oil in regards to the engine.
