The Q&A was so hard to hear with the music in the background, but it sounds like Tada said work on the Supra started before the FT1, but people loved it so much that they worked with Calty to incorporate some of the styling cues onto the Supra.
I'm not going to search through all his post, but I do recall A70 saying something like this... we should stop comparing it to the FT1 because the two are technically unrelated, or something a long those lines.

So in the other words if it wasn't for the awesome design team at Calty we would have gotten 1. a totally different design or 2. a rebadge hardtop Z4 with only mirror styling tweaks.

Calty probably would have still penned the design IMO, but it just so happened that they were doing a simultaneous "design study."

Thing is, the manager that approved that exercise likely knew the Supra was in development or at least had a hunch, so while unrelated on the one hand it still showed something that resonated well with the public that they could use to apply to the Supras aesthetic.

I wish Toyota had made this joint car with BMW look more like that old FT-HS concept. Then save the FT1's design for a reskin LC flagship. They probably wouldn't have sold many at six figures, but the FT1 was beautiful. Lastly have the SF-R as a 86 replacement. And we have the three brothers that Akio wanted.:D

Besides, they both kind of already have a similar proportion.

They were VERY close to making it happen, I think 85-90 percent there, but it never went to production. Had the design and materials ready I believe but I guess they couldn't justify the cost and development.

A shame too. If it ended up being a 15k Miata-esque vehicle in the USA with reasonable torque and low weight, I see that thing being an absolute best seller for the teens looking for a first car and potential to mod to respectable power within a reasonable amount.

Guess we'll wait to see what the third brother will be.
