You live your life dictated by AI now eh old timer?
Apparently
You're grossly misrepresenting the weight of the Cayman by comparing the lightest Cayman to the heaviest Supra. The base four cylinder automatic Cayman model is 50lbs lighter than the base four cylinder automatic Supra.

The weight difference isn't in the chassis, it's in the engine. If you want a car powered by a turbo inline six, then you've got to pay the weight penalty of such a configuration. But if weight is the primary concern, then you're after the four cylinder versions of either model.

Personally, I'm fine with the weight of the Supra. I don't notice a difference when I have a 150lb passenger, so I doubt I'd notice if the car was suddenly the weight of a GTS 4.0L cayman.
I agree the weight doesn't really bug me, but the wheelbase certainly does. Hoping they change it if we do indeed get a gen 6.

Ok, I was wrong the car is not supposed to be a GT like the 4 generations before it. You win. Congrats.

It still needs a longer wheel base. The wheel base it has now is more fitting for a vehicle 300lbs+ lighter (like the Caymen). I suspect the next gen will infact get this longer wheel base and I will be a happy boy.
The 718 Cayman is 0.6 inches longer than our Supra. So it’s not a huge difference. I personally like a shorter wheelbase with more agility for tracking. A longer wheelbase = more stability at higher speeds. So I get why some may prefer that for GT driving/cruising around.

Looks like a GR Yaris to me. Daihatsu being present makes sense because they co-developed the Yaris.

This could be an event to celebrate winning the WRC Manufactures Title this year while revealing next year's GRY GRMN trim.

Yeah it looks like a Yaris but why have a 3rd one on stage next to the MK4?…

You have a good eye, I didn't notice that one.

Sadly, it looks like they took the same picture of the covered Yaris and did a copy-pasta with some scale and rotates to put the other two in place. You can tell the shadows are the same on all three cars.

So if they are unveiling three different cars at this event, they aren't the ones in the photo.

Well this now makes it very unclear as to what Toyota intends with the new Celica or MR2. Sharing a platform makes sense. Sharing range topping engines and the AWD system and transmissions makes sense.

But a "Celica" isn't a two seater mid engine two door coupe. It's a 2+2 two door coupe. Whatever merged finality emerges here... if true... is effectively an "MR2". I mean... maybe Toyota is taking inspiration from the Lotus Evora since that is a rare case of being a 2+2 (a very tight one) mid engine coupe. If that were the case it could kind of be argued that the vehicle is a "Celica"... but what is being discussed here is a two seater only vehicle.

It will be a very weird choice if this is actually what they're doing, calling what is really an MR2 a "Celica".

Imo Bestcar is 50/50 at best, no pun intended... and they usually aren't very accurate until we're closer to the launch date, like 6 months to year out.

I'm thinking it's a close to mid engine car

I can see a new "Celica" being front mid-engine. That would track with the ethos of the model, allowing it to retain a 2+2 seating layout and improve from previous Celica generations while also allowing the subframe to be flipped the other way around for a rear wheel drive vehicle with some modifications for a more limited production rear mid-engine "MR2".

I just don't personally get ditching the MR2 name altogether, making what is essentially an improved two-seater true successor to the MR2 Turbo SW20 series... and then calling it a "Celica".

Even the inclusion of AWD on a new MR2 generation tracks with tradition since the AW11 generation 1 chassis was originally intended for the canceled Group S rally class (after Group B was cancelled in 1986) and had a prototype AWD system that never made mass production (the MR2 AW11 "222D").

Again... I can kind of see it as a "Celica" if this de-facto MR2 chassis is made in a 2+2 seating layout very much like the Lotus Evora is... but unless that's the case the naming scheme that's being suggested makes no sense in my opinion.

Regardless I'm happy for whatever the actual final car will be no matter what it's called. Any upcoming mid-engine RWD or AWD turbo sportscar model with available M/T and A/T options is very welcome.

It definitely sounds like the Toyota GR folks are testing that new 2.0L engine in a transverse MR configuration in a mule chassis to work out the final kinks in it under extreme driving conditions in that layout before doing something similar with it in production in another, newer chassis.
