Brake upgrade: recommendations?

The time has come for me to change the brake discs and pads on my GR, and it might be the perfect opportunity to upgrade to better brakes.

I use the car as a daily, I never plan on tracking it, but I do drive pretty hard ( a lot of highway braking & mountain roads ) in all weather conditions ( cold/hot wet/dry ).

I have found alot of brake upgrades on the forum, but most of them are track focused and not suitable for an emergency brake in the cold for instance. (To my knowledge)

I do not care about brake dust/noise, I only care about maximum performance suited to my driving style/in emergency situations.

Am I better off sticking to OEM brakes or is there any upgrade that fits my description without being double the price of OEM ? Maybe stock discs with better pads?

P.S. I do know that the best way to get better braking performance is by getting some good tyres, which I have already done: just installed some fresh Continental Sportcontact 7’s

from what I’ve tried beside the OEM, project mu and Endless are both great. I daily drive the car and occasionally track it. Project Mu Racing-N1 it’s a circuit use only it’s written on the pads but for me I was using them as a street use and occasionally track days (two track days) and I can say they are perfect for street use, it makes a brake dust but not that much and they are not noisy if you’re going to use on the street. Endless MX-72 plus (street x circuit) which I’m using it on the mean time, the initial bite on these brakes are great compared to Racing-N1 but they are noisy. But in general, both of the brakes I mentioned above are circuit and street x circuit. You can check Endless brakes website, maybe it will help you decide.

I’m not sure what kind of street driving you are doing that can exceed the stopping ability of the stock brake system. You seem to be awfully worried about emergency situations as well. I would suggest not pursuing the Darwin Award bc chances are you will win it.

Seeing that you live in a hot climate with good roads I can understand why these circuit-marketed pads worked for you. I am a little sceptical they would fit my needs though, as it gets pretty cold and wet where I live, and to my understanding those pads need some heat in them in order to perform properly.

Hawk would be another option. We put their HP plus pads on the wife’s GTI. Damnnnnnnnnnn what an upgrade. She can stop on a dime now. I keep thinking/wondering how she’d do on track with those pads. They’re fantastic!!

I honestly don't see any reason to change to anything other than OEM if you aren't tracking the vehicle. The OEM brakes are far more than sufficient for any amount of street driving you could do IMO.

I would just stick with OEM brakes if you plan to stick to street only driving.

I’m curious, a lot of people are recommending pads only, so I’m assuming the OE rotors are actually good enough in my case? Will they be able to handle the extra bite from the aftermarket pads?

OE rotors are fine for anything street related. I even use cheap ass non-oem 1 piece rotors on track and they work fine.

Hawk hp pads would be an upgrade.
You can't out drive the OEM stuff on the streets even with "aggressive" fast and furious driving.

OEM rotors are perfect, calipers are perfect.

If you waste money and upgrade the caliper, rotors, pads you can't take advantage of mega stopping power on street tires. The anti lock will just get more of a work out.

Sounds like the hawk HPS 5.0 is right for you. They only need to heat up to 100*F to be at optimal temperature which is barely anything. i used to daily on hawk HP+ which are 300*F and i never noticed they didn't work well even in the winter.
