Nah, lower pricing models are the bread and butter for the brand because they sell more and is the key to getting buyers to go for the more $$$ model 10 years down the track
Yes, but it doesn't sound like this is the strategy anymore. Pushing the GR brand as a "sporty" intermediary between boring Toyotas and expensive Lexus cars is a sure way to increase the prices of all three tiers.

Other than to create this new tiered branding, I actually think this GT is a bit of a fail. It's going to be very expensive and according to Toyota, not particularly exclusive. Who is this car for exactly: A buyer that has a couple of hundred thousand USD to spend who has a penchant for avoiding more exotic and exclusive cars?

I think this might be Toyota's NSX moment. They've probably built a great car but priced it to compete with cars that ooze status and exclusivity just from their nameplate.. a market Toyota simply isn't equipped to compete in. Just ask Honda.

Time will tell, I guess.

It is still the strategy to introduce young buyers to the GR brand and move them up to a higher GR model as they get older and they might buy some other Toyota or Lexus models to carry family or use in their job.

Time will tell whether it will be another flop like the NSX V2. I don't think they will sweat over sales figures here. People with money that already have Ferraris and Lambos is the demographic for this car. People who can afford but dislike Ferrari and Lambis's loudness is also the demographic, I guess.

In recent memory, Dodge tried to spin off SRT into it's own standalone / sub brand and it didn't work out too well. Hopefully Toyota knows what they are doing. To me it just seems like unnecessary addition marketing and confusion. My 2 cents is Toyota should have just sold the GT under the Lexus LFR nameplate as they had trademarked. Keep the Supra, Celica, MR2, and 86 under the Toyota GR badge and maybe have a Lexus version of the upcoming A100, aka SC.

Again, make no mistake. This car exists so Toyota can have a brawler of a GT3 car. They've been hiring for, expanding and working on their customer motorsports interest as well and that is it's own business case there. Audi left a lot of business on the table to mop up and I have no doubt that TGR is going to try to absorb some of that.

Homologtion only requires them to sell 300 units of the street car each year. I'd guess that is their target.

Notice the GR GT doesn’t have any Toyota logo/branding? It’ll be exclusive to Lexus dealers that want to participate in selling this car. Most likely the high end Lexus dealers where the demographic is also cross shopping for other high end brands. Your average Lexus dealers that live off of selling RX/TX won’t be getting one most likely.

I don’t see the rest of the affordable GR cars being sold at Lexus. It’ll cheapen the Lexus image selling these mainstream cars.

Personally, I think the GR GT is a BIG, over priced, beast of a car. And like a number of the other BIG GT3 cars, I'm OK if the want to race them. But I don't want one. My current Supra is as big as a fun to drive sports car needs to be... just in my humble opinion.

I want a small 2 seater, 4 cylinder, turbo that can carry high revs, is mounted mid-engine, is all wheel drive, and has about as many 'luxury' features as the current Supra. I don't want to drive a 600-800hp behemoth on the street. I want an up scale, faster, nimbler, better designed competitor to the Miata! I'd rather it have a roof than be a convertible, but a targa top isn't out of the question. I'd also like it reasonable well insulated for sound and have a better than average sound system. A bit of exhaust note is OK, but I'm way past having a car that is so loud that you can't hear the music...

I really like it, but I have a hard time believing the Corvette won't simply be the better option for whatever too-much-dollars Toyota will inevitably charge for this.

If the Grand Sport has a Manual I'd agree

So you want a GR MR2 (or Porsche Cayman). Check.

I feel like not everyone defines "better" as hp/mph/0-60 per $ or whatever subjective metric we as enthusiast apply. Cars are best experienced from behind the wheel and not looking over specs in a magazine. The corvette has always objectively been a great car at a comparatively low price and Toyota probably isn't aiming to beat them at that.

So what is Toyota aiming to do: Make a more expensive car that is worse? The more I think about it, the more I think this is Toyota's NSX moment.
