I'm writing to both catalog and potentially help someone in the future with this problem.

Around a month ago when driving with the windows down I heard a sound akin to a rock stuck in the tire when accelerating on a tighter on ramp. I go home, look everything over, nothing. I take the car out and realize I can reproduce the problem as slow as 15-20mph when putting a higher lateral load on the front tires. Its difficult to say but I'm fairly certain both sides are affected, perhaps left greater than right.

The car was fitted with Apex VS-5RS 19x9.5 & 19x11 on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Front 265/35-19 and Rear 305/30-19 just over 10 months ago. The remainder of the mods are likely non-contributory, but contain intake, downpipe, cat-back exhaust, and a JB4.

Toyota technician diagnosed the issue as a loose JB4 cable on the fender wall (I already had my reservations because I made damn sure those cables weren't loose) and charged me for $150 for a non-warranty issue. Get into the car and the problem is unchanged.

This time they allowed me to take the tech for a ride, easily and regularly reproducing the problem. After they looked at again, they have no idea and said "they have nothing to compare it to so it may be normal". They recommended putting the stock wheels back on.

And here we are now. I'm about to put the stock wheels on it at home and seeing if I can reproduce it again.

I'm already over this.

Does the sound follow wheel RPM? If so; Tire rub? How much clearance is there between the wheel and caliper?

If it’s just an occasional clicking sound not following wheel speed, then may just be suspension creak? How bad is it? If not bad, then it may not be worth fixating on.

Yes, follows wheel RPM. It sounds mechanical, absolutely not tire rub. And the tires have increased in clearance if anything since they've been dailied for 10 months. Clearance is fine. I looked at everything from the break shield, calipers, rotor, and anything else visible in the front end.

The intensity is directly correlated with lateral load. The harder the cornering the louder.

It's bad enough that I'm not inclined to track it again in this condition.

I noticed a noise similar to what you are describing on a recent trip in the mountains, but haven't had a chance to get the car on the lift and check it out. I noticed it mostly when turning left, but pretty sure it did it both ways. I heard it in the car, but was surprised how much came through on the camera.

Here's a quick clip -

Yup, I do the same thing up at the dragon. Replaced a wheel bearing thinking it was the cause. Friction rings are needed.

So glad someone finally got this on video. I even hear it when cornering in parking decks.

I have this exact issue myself with the OEM 2020-2023 wheels. (And I have two sets of these wheels, both with the same issue)

Should I get friction rings?

Here's a quick clip -

It's a bit tough to hear but it sounds almost identical.

I took the time to change to the OEM wheels and it made no difference.

Thank you all for the excellent thread. I've ordered the friction rings and will update.

A friend of mine had a similar issue on his 2022. Dealer replaced both wheel bearings and the noise was gone.

There is a TSB for many BMW models, including our platform mate G29 Z4, concerning ticking sounds coming from the front rotors under high load. The TSB is SI B34 05 17 for anyone who has access to BMW bulletins.

Depending on the car, the solution is a very thin friction ring between rotor and wheel and/or hub and rotor. For total clarity: it might be solved with 1 per side, or 2 per side, depending on the mating surfaces that are experiencing micro-movements.

Part number(s) and more info available in this US NHTSA doc.
