I would like to refer anyone who has a big problem with the 2.0L in the new Supra to the monstrosity that were the 125 hp 1G-E and 160 hp 1G-FE-powered GA70 Supras.

Haha.

As currently stands the main reason the 2.0L isn't appealing even as a cheaper Supra is the lack of a standard LSD. A GT86 gets you that for less. And a manual. The B48 engine otherwise has potential for respectable tuning to make it better than it is in stock form.

But right off the bat a 2.0L Supra needs some kind of LSD installed immediately be it a factory BMW diff or a compatible aftermarket diff. And in so doing does that technically kill the car's warranty immediately? If Toyota found out then I would venture a guess that it would.

So why does a $42k Supra 2.0L not get something that a $26k GT86 gets standard on all model trims?

$47.5k and it has an open diff? And there is no basic mechanical LSD option?

Until the manual version debuts either the Supra 3.0L or GT86 6MT (both of which have LSDs as standard) are better values.

The cost of a new replacement 3.0L LSD/full diff casing from the dealer parts counter probably makes up the rest of the 3.0L cost difference alone.

C&D didn’t break down the options and costs that were added to get to their $47.5k figure.

I think the 2.0 will be a temporary entry in the US since we are between generations of the 86 and are awaiting the GRMN model. I think the 2.0 will then be dropped after the new 86 arrives since there is very little reason to buy this car.

For now this gives Toyota a car in the ~$40k range to upsell 86 shoppers if they are dissatisfied with how the age of the current 86 and since there is a reasonable performance gap between the current 86 and 2.0 Supra. Both of these reasons will be moot upon GR86 release. Also, the GRMN will probably drop within a year or so of the GR86. Selling at a much higher price than the 3.0, GR86 and GRMN Supra shoppers will not intersect so there will be no competition between these models.

I traded in a 2.0 turbo that made 300hp for my A90 . Best decision ever . The 4banger just has no guts and sounds like dog shit. You will have fun for a day or two but then you will regret not getting the bigger motor . Plus resell value Will be terrible in the 4 cylinder to the tune of $10,000 usd.

Awesome video and I definitely feel the same about the potential of the 2.0.

Btw, their cars had a "recommended gear" indicator for fuel economy on the cluster. Do the North American cars not have that option, because I've never seen one with it? Wondering if that's buried in the menus somewhere.

I dont know but I've been trying to find out how to flash the Japanese firmware to the car so we can have it in the us but i think the dmu is region locked. I cant find any japanese parts either. Not a single parts website in japan has parts i can find schematics for. Maybe these are special toyota r&d cars with different software.

i know a couple 135i and 2 series bmw i drove had it but they were 4cylinders not 3. Liter 6 cyl.

Pretty impressive stock figures, and not bad at all with just a tune, especially that torque figure. Curious to see how a downpipe would add to that. I think a 2.0 at 350hp might be an absolute monster on a track, the weight savings are no joke.
