Buy a new valve cover from Toyota and have an Indy shop you trust do the work if you don’t trust the dealer to do it. The idea of driving around with a JB welded valve cover is inconceivable to me.

Try to do a simple oil change. Pull in off the engine cover and the back left boss broke on the what appears to be a cam cover!!

it’s barely holding on. Does this open up to the engine?!

what do I do now? Try to glue it? With what. Not sure this would be covered by warranty!

Damn; damn, damn!!

How did this happen??? That plastic is not very easy to break.

Well don’t say it isn’t easy to break because it didn’t take much to do it. I just lifted a bit too high on a corner and “crack”. I bought a new VC, I’m just going to take it to the BMW dealership and have them do it. The “jb weld “ should hold till then at least.

I've owned lots of bikes that had plastic male peg-neoprene female grommet attachments. Applying a thin coat of silicone grease on the male peg ( no...not THAT one) eases removal and install.

So I called up BMW dealership and tried to explain to the service lady how I needed to bring my Toyota to them to work on the BMW engine valve cover.

10 min later, after explaining to her and service manager, they said I needed to come by and let them “see” the engine to make sure they could work on it. They still couldn’t seem to wrap their head around a Toyota with a BMW engine. At one point they thought I did an engine swap.

Got there this morning and let them “see” it. They were like “OH! it’s like a Z4!”

Finally! They got it!!!

Let us know how the repair turns out.

That section must have a molding defect there. The boss could benefit from ribs to reinforce and help with lateral stress. Like example below.

Now I know to be extra careful with that corner of the cover.

Sometimes I miss my engineering days. In program management I don't get to play around with CAD as much. What components are you working with?

I’m working with some plastic housings for an AED (automated external defibrillator). I work for a medical device manufacturer. We see these types of defects all the time.

It's awesome learning about what everyone does when they're not playing with their cars. Medical Devices is a super hard industry to work in (I have a software-engineer friend in that field).

Which corner of the engine did it happen on? Sorry if it is stated within the thread and I missed it.

Just out of curiousity, was everything warm when you removed the cover? Being that you were doing an oil change, I’d think so.

Asking because of this from the service manual, though it’s mostly talking about damage to the acoustic cover, not the valve cover.
