As the title states:

I have been meticulously measuring engine oil level but after adding my last quart the car stopped reliably giving engine oil level readings. I have a video to show the symptoms, but once I enter the process to measure oil level, the car stops measuring right around 20%. I’ve only been successful in measuring the oil level once since adding the last quart, but this was after sitting idling for some time after my usual longer drive to get warm enough for measurement.

Has anyone had this issue crop up? Is it time to change my oil weight and swap the potentially faulty sensor?

Okay sounds like this is connected to my insane oil consumption issues? If I replace this sensor, then maybe it will slow down the oil consumption. I guess I can take the time to replace the oil with a higher weight as well.

Seems like their is also an oil pressure solenoid, but if that needs to be replaced after I do the sensor, I'm definitely taking her to the dealership....

Just got back from the dealer, the service advisor over there has me setup to record oil consumption, so I've got the tamper proof goo on my drain plug and oil cap.

They insisted (even calling an engineer specializing in the Supra) that the oil temperature is the main culprit behind the failing process to check the oil level. I was told that if the engine oil temp is above 90C then the test will fail.

What is wild is that I literally never had this issue before, I drove the piss out of the car and come to a stop many times to check the oil level while red hot on the engine. Why would it suddenly start malfunctioning when it's at those temps? Anyway I will have to go back to get my oil consumption measured, and I will hopefully have enough leverage to ask them to replace that sensor, since I am in danger of burning oil past the minimum since the sensor keeps malfunctioning.

Their insistence has me anxious to drive the car hard (like normal) since I could be walking into a bad situation low on oil with no reliable way to tell. I suppose I will be using something like Bimmerlink to measure the oil level, or I will have to just barely get the car warm and test immediately after idling for 10 minutes on cold start.

Either way, frustrating trip to the dealership with a potentially bad situation currently in play. If I can't figure out a way to get the team at Round Rock Toyota to replace this sensor I will likely do it myself.

Are you still under warranty?

Any indication to suspect the thermostat? yeah use BimmerLink to check oil temp and the secret menu.
At 1:42 we have coolant&Oil temp

Haven’t thought if the thermostat reading high would cause the oil test to fail. Not sure how I would go about confirming this. I guess I would need to understand normal operating temperature for the engine.

Can’t even get the car to read oil levels after it is definitely below 90c. Sat there and let it cool, started it up and ran the oil test many times until the car finally hit 90c, all tests failed.

The claim about the measurement failing due to oil temps over 90deg celsius doesn’t make sense. bmw oil measurements are done when oil has warmed up. I have run the measurement job several times while the oil temps are above 100deg cel (using bimmerlink to read the temp sensors). But dealer testing is needed for warranty claims, so I hope the manual checks they are setting up helps to verify the consumption. but I don’t see how it’ll help them fix the measurement issues. fingers crossed.

It makes no sense to me and is a big reason why I decided to not bring the car back to that specific dealer. I will be taking the car to Cedar Park Toyota under many recommendations. I have chosen not to address oil consumption with them, rather only specifically target this senor's issues. I understand driving like I do causes some level of oil consumption, and I don't care about the extra quart of oil in my glovebox, but I don't want to blow my engine because I had no idea I was below minimum.

So for now I am using Bimmerlink to view raw sensor data. Can anyone tell me what the minimum level in mm is for this oil level? It is my understanding that the car tells you to add 1L of oil when it's only 500ml low on oil. But this sensor just spit out a value in mm telling you what it sees in the oil pan.

Understand on the oil consumption bit. Yours does sound on the high side, but as long as Toyota has it on record and you monitor it till it’s fully broken in (10k km), you are still covered by warranty and safe. Also, who knows if there is a related issue causing this measurement problem too. So best to get this sorted first.

I’ve tried using the oil level sensor with BimmerLink, but frankly, I’ve never seen it move much. And my oil level via the Idrive check has also been stable at max for the last 2000km or so. Sorry, not much help on this.
