I'm half way through machining up a special tool to remove the knob which I know doesn't help you much but I can give you some insights after buying a new knob and boot assembly and looking at it. The slot at the front of the plastic knob section isn't any use to actually release the plastic locking collar as it's actually a separate piece for the area around the locking collar and only there to locate the single stitched front boot seam. My advice is to pull the boot up as far as you can with it inside out and apply some heat carefully to the knob section plastic collar. You will need to take care and direct the heat gun source up inside the outer collar so it warms the inner locking collar. Then use the pulling methodology. My tool is an aluminium split clamp that clamps around the large diameter of the shifter shaft and gives a leverage point for a pair of flat blade screw drives on the knob outer collar to pop it off.Can confirm, the damn knob is not giving in. Looks like if I use brute force, the thing will brake and I'll hit my face with the knob lol.
Any other method to remove it "properly" ?
