Interesting ! There is a big thread on the Corvette forum about the C7 now holding better value than the C8. The front engine 7 speed manual is a car to have. The dual clutch is fun but not rewarding per that conversation. This controversy between drive trains is now more generational than car based. If I were sitting in daily traffic with any car I would have an auto. Both the C8 and Supra I would guess for the masses are not their daily drivers, so that opens the door for the manual,

One advantage of the C8, burglars might get stuck in them. Might hold true for manual cars someday too - unable to drive them - unable to steal em ?

The other issue is, it SUCKS to be a passenger in a manual car.

Umm, wut?! This is one hundred percent a driver skill issue. If one can't drive smooth enough to not annoy the passengers, ESPECIALLY in a new MT with a CDV and auto rev-matching, that person is beyond help, and frankly an embarrassment.

However, between us, if one were to purposely give their spouse a rough ride, in order to crush their desire to ever be a passenger in his toy car...that would be completely understandable. A mans gotta have his sanctuary somewhere..

I was just taking the piss but when I think about it, it's actually 100% true. The only reason why automatic drivers beat manual ones is because they have microchips doing the work for them. ?

And we can digress to absurdium if you like.. but why not go the other way: A car driven completely by AI will undoubtedly smoke all the those poor automatic drivers. Lucky they can still beat those driving manual transmissions though. ?

We also have microchips steering for us, braking for us (ABS, stability assist), rolling down the windows, etc. The rear differential is electric. I’m fine with it.

Most newer manuals even come with rev matching, which is takes away part of the fun. Sure, you can turn off rev matching, you can also put the auto in manual mode.

This is closer to reality than people realize. Newer generations are caring less and less about cars in general.

Sorry to revive an old thread but this is mostly true about the younger generation. A lot of younger kids didn’t grow up with car enthusiast dads or weren’t around cars like the prior generation. They car about simple and point a to point b which is why everyone and their mom’s had a Tesla. Simple and gets the job done for them.

A bit of over generalisation here…many young kids asked me to rev it and they got excited when they see the car or heard the vroom vroom…the rev-head enthusiastic heart is still with some of the youngsters …it was never a large demographic even 2+ decades ago

Funny you say that. I heard someone on a car show (I believe The Drive) saying in the future, the majority of people will be using autonomous driving vehicles. Their kids will grow up accustom to them and not even think about the driving experience like we do. All the big car manufacturers are putting a shit ton of money into perfecting AI ? driving algorithms.

So, I hate to say it, but I bet for the majority of people, that assumption will be true.

Exactly. And I don’t know if it’s in the next 10 years or maybe 15-20 years but it’s inevitable. The kids right now and next generation won’t care at all about car culture like we do and the prior generation did. It’s going to be very niche if it even at all exists. The other thing which someone else talked about in this thread is if you plan on paying off your MKV in several years to then sell it in the future like MKIV owners did, you’re better off investing that money somewhere else for retirement.

Yea the only thing they really care about is CarPlay, and whether the car can drive itself.

I live in Orange County, Ca. Neighbors who bought the house across the street from me are YouTube content creators who make kid videos with their kids. They have millions of subscribers and make a good mid six figure living and are in their early 30’s and they, their family, parents, relatives and everyone they know who visits them all drive Teslas. When they have house parties or friends over, it’s like a Tesla dealership parking lot. The younger generation doesn’t care as much about manuals or car culture as we all hoped they would.

Just had to help my 22YO daughter buy a cheap car (hers got written off, not her fault and she's a Uni student). Her written off car was an auto as was her first car. When we were considering a replacement car she told me she wanted a manual. She's not even licenced to drive a manual but she just wanted a manual. So we ended up with a Corolla and last Thursday she fronted up to the registry and took her manual driving test in it after 6 days of instruction/practice and passed without an issue. The amazing bit is in 5 weeks time she'll be licenced to drive a manual car without any test involved anyway. Confidence goes a long way.

Nice story. BTW my 25YO son learned to drive in a manual and passed his first licence test in a manual. Keepin the dream alive, lol.

"Problem" with any car that has a manual transmission is that it takes deliberate effort and concentration to drive well. This is exactly why I love manual cars.

However, for the average "enthusiast driver", Its slower compared to the auto on the street. Young folks these days already have attention span and inflated ego issues. I see remarks like, "why would you buy a manual its so much slower, how embarrassing?!" I don't see it getting better as time goes on. This is your buyer pool in 10-20+ years.

I think the car will definitely have a niche market but I feel it wont be all that special to those folks looking for a "classic" car 20+ years from now.

No one knows its all speculation anyway.

What you probably don't realise is Autos are very much an American and Aussie thing. The majority of Europeans and southeast Asians drive manuals. I'm just back from 5 weeks in Italy and it's unusual to see an auto in any form inc taxi cabs and delivery vans even in Rome and Milano. Not saying they are rare but manuals are the majority for sure. Same in Asia, Vietnam, etc.
