I been seeing rumors a while back about how the next Nissan Z car (Z35 platform) might be moving upmarket to complete with the higher priced sports coupes like the BMW M4. Seems this might be even more true now that the Infiniti Q60's V6 twin turbo engine has been revealed, with as much as 400hp. If the next Nissan Z gets that engine it'll be putting down enough power to compete with the FT-1 Supra.

If they move the Z upmarket like this we might be seeing the Supra and Z competing directly again like back in the 90's.

I think the next Z will actually be cheaper. Sales of the current model are bad. The Z sold the best when it started at $25k with the 350z.

Nissan's Future Z Car Could Be Cheaper Than The Current 370Z

Thereā€™s no denying that Nissan wants to create something special with the 370Zā€™s replacement, and new reports suggests things could get better.

Borrowing styling cues from the Gripz and EsFlow Concepts, the future Nissan Z will apparently remind people of the legendary 240Z, with the Japanese car manufacturer trying its best to integrate the appeal of the old model in the upcoming product. In fact, Nissan has its mind set to make the machine more modular, accessible and, most importantly, more affordable.

According to Autovisie, Nissanā€™s design boss, Mamori Aoki, said that the 370Zā€™s successor may be cheaper than the current generation, focusing at a younger audience ā€“ an approach that could have a positive effect and impact on the Z brand. Why? Because as appealing as sports cars can be, many customers (especially younger ones) canā€™t afford them; case in point, Nissan apparently sells most of its 370Zs to older people.

Moreover, by reducing the price on the future Z, the Nippon firm could create a window for a powerful model to fit between the aforementioned product and the GT-R. Either way, it seems like a win-win situation for the car company, and we canā€™t see Nissan dropping the ball on this one.

Awhile back I also thought the Z may go up market, especially with the rumored return of the S16. But I doubt that new since Nissan stated the IDx concept is dead.

Good point, unless they plan to abandon the entire 'affordable' sporty car space, or replace the Z's current position with the Juke  I still cringe when I see crossovers selling as well as they are.

Nissan 370Z successor won't be a crossover

Nissan 370Z successor won't be a crossover

NISMO chief product specialist Hiroshi Tamura has revealed the company will eventually offer a 370Z successor.

Speaking to Motoring, Tamura downplayed rumors that the Gripz concept indicates the next-generation Z will be a crossover. As he explained, he doesn't want the Gripz to replace the 370Z but he hinted the two models could be based on the same platform and share components. The move would help to reduce development costs which is critical as sports cars such as the 370Z have limited appeal and aren't particularly profitable.

Tamura went on to suggest the next-generation Z will be a more mainstream model that will likely be smaller and more fuel-efficient than its predecessor. The car is also expected to be more affordable which could go a long way in increasing its appeal. The current model starts at $29,990 which is significantly more expensive than rivals such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang.

Tamura declined to say when the 370Z successor will arrive but sources have told the publication the model is at least two years away.

Unless they move the GT-R even more upmarket, which has been happening with its pricing since it was first introduced.
Could be, everyone is saying its going to be a hybrid. So maybe that means more $$$$

Interesting development? Next Z car could be significantly lighter.

Nissan Vows To Enforce A Strict Diet For Future Models

As far as New Year's resolutions go, losing weight is a common one and now it's become an automakers' favorite, too.

Nissan is keen on sticking by its own; that is, work hard to significantly reduce the weight of its passenger car range this year and beyond.

The "Lightweighting Program" is set to produce a pioneering prototype material structure, meant to be used in the floor of their future models. In order to achieve this, Nissan will use the types of materials and techniques that are widely used in motorsport as well as the aerospace industry.

Even before that, Nissan's new approach has resulted in a 90kg (198 lbs) weight loss for the X-Trail and 40kg (88 lbs) for the new Qashqai.

"The next 12 months promise to bring not resolutions, but revolutions, as the brand marches forward with yet more ā€˜Innovation That Excitesā€™. This program is another demonstration of our commitment to developing the cars of tomorrow, today.", said the brand's VP of vehicle design & development David Moss.

"We know the cars of the future will need to be lighter, stronger and more efficient, that is why we are launching our prototype program in collaboration with research and industry bodies across the UK. It intends to produce a new manufacturing process that will revolutionize the industry."

With these efforts, Nissan is looking to improve performance, fuel consumption and counteract the weight of the increasing amount of technology being built into modern-day vehicles.

But at what cost. It's still very expensive to drop major weight in cars since the only way to do it is using a lot of carbon fiber construction, which is still expensive to do for most manufacturers.

AFAIK, Nissan hasn't invested heavily or partnered with anyone to develop the manufacturing of carbon fiber on a big scale, so my guess is they'll try to save weight with more extensive use of lightweight steel and aluminum. If they're talking about using carbon fiber then either they're going to eat a lot of the costs of producing cars with it or Nissan fans better prepare for a nice price increase for whatever model gets it.

None of that seems to jive if they want to make the next Z more mainstream and affordable. Maybe years down the line some of this light weighting program can benefit a niche model like the Z.

With the new 2017 Q60/Q50 having VR30DDTT 3.0 twin turbo 400hp, this engine is only 18lbs heavier than the former V6 n/a, it makes me think this new motor might find its way under the hood of the next generation Z, specially both cars always shared their motors in the past G35/350Z then G37/370Z.
