The 3rd Gen FD was definitely one of my "dreamers" in the late 90's... unfortunately I was only playing with "civic money" back then and had to settle for cars that I could put 300K miles on without any significant mechanical issues. I drooled over a friend's FD... but I think he had as many engine replacements as I had oil changes (which I only did every ~25K miles). :D God I abused the crap out of that car... and it never let me down once.

I know that had a great deal to do with my affinity for a manual transmission. Just the comfort in knowing that there was so little that could go wrong - with almost no computers involved and direct mechanical connections between me and the car in every way. Even had manual windows and door locks... so a can of WD-40, a spool of wire, some duct tape, and a screwdriver was enough to fix nearly any issue that came up.

The RX-7 FD has been a bucket list car for me. The lines are stunning even today (although the MKV is up there as well in looks!) and despite the need to upgrade the cooling system and intercooler among other things just to achieve better reliability it’s one of the best and most balanced sportscars of the 90’s.

A friend’s father had a ‘93 R1 manual in bright factory yellow paint when they were new and I similarly drooled over that thing. Even then he had reliability issues with it (or maybe some of it was his being new to rotaries) but that’s part of the package with a stock engine FD.

Such a beautiful car!

Mine was silver and I did have to have the manifold housing replaced (under warranty, this contained to turbos) but other than a little oil consumption, not to be confused with current Supra issues, revving that thing to 8K redline was a blast!!!! Smooth as butter.....service tech told me when they replaced the manifold, that if the engine had problems, it was cheaper to buy a new engine than to have it fixed.....not a lot of rotary mechanics at the time even though there were only 3 moving parts!!!

I have driven manual cars all my life. Its fun to shift and rev match your own gears and enjoy mountain roads and track days. All that said Toyota should offer both. I like the auto ZF 8 speed a lot. Its a fun smart transmission. Do I miss a manual not really. This is a great daily sport car and weekend track weapon. All that matters is you enjoy what you drive.

The more you rev it the more oil you consume by design ;)

I believe it. Having just gone through the entire process of removing the stock 2JZ twin turbos and replacing them with new ones with the engine in the vehicle I totally believe your old mechanic’s advice even though it’s a different and much smaller engine with far fewer moving parts. Both the FD and A80 had the vacuum control parts of their respective sequential twin turbo systems designed by Hitachi. Both are very complicated to take apart and put back together.

The 13B-REW rotary has been said to need a full engine out rebuild service every 60k-70k miles or so anyway.

Still, a fantastic driver’s car. It’s just not a practical one to use all the time.

Hmmmmmmm........

I put 50K on mine before having to get rid of it (needed a couple extra seats). It was my daily driver until it was gone.......didn't get more practical than that but I do see your point. Practicality only flew out the window when kid was born.....

Honestly? I love hearing about how an FD actually *was* (or still is) someone’s practical daily driver. Following the care and maintenance schedule faithfully and upgrading the cooling system among other things seem to be the keys to keeping those engines and their apex seals happy.

It’s good to hear that so long as the FD is in good shape and is well maintained that it can be a relatively trouble-free everyday sportscar.

And I totally understand... when a kid comes into the picture it’s difficult to use a two-seater:thumbsup:

It’s certainly on my short list of classics to own :)

I've purchased 3 Toyota's since 2018 and 2 of them were from the same salesman. He also owns a Supra as I do, but a 2021 not 2020.
He was at my place last week and we were talking about tuning and racing etc. I asked if he was going to tune once they could crack the ecu on his 21. So he told me he was actually thinking about selling his already. Before I could ask why, he told me Toyota is coming out with a manual Supra next year. I was like, what, really ? and he said yes. It's not public yet but it looks like it will be happening soon.
I think that's great news ! There's a lot of people who would prefer manual or have purchased something else instead so they could have a manual. I at least think there should be the option.
I drove manuals for years when I was younger and I actually just bought a 2021 Tacoma 6 speed manual.

So my question is, would you buy a manual Supra and or trade, sell your existing Supra for a manual ?

Before my Supra purchase I had never owned an automatic vehicle and I had always heard people say that automatics were "not fun", or years ago "slow slushboxes", so needless to say I was concerned but curious when I went to test drive this car. Now, after owning it for a year, I can say with confidence that I do not miss owning a manual vehicle, not that they are bad or that I have anything against them, I actually do take the opportunity to drive a manual any chance I get, but I have nothing but respect for the ZF trans platform in this car. The way this thing shifts is unlike anything that I personally have ever driven and I enjoy driving this car in sport manual mode so much, it makes me so happy and always puts a smile on my face.

To answer the question, I think that decision would be made if and only if the manual could some how match the performance of the ZF 8 speed, which just isn't possible, so my answer is no, I wouldn't be trading my Supra for the manual, and if anyone wanted to make snide comments about "driving an automatic not being real driving", I would probably hop in their manual and shift it better than them anyways.....
