I know about the CF roof. That's why am guessing maybe the addition of a sunroof was what added weight to the car. Maybe one of the marketing genius said a sunroof would be good especially if the car wont have a targa top.

For sure.. given how much they’ve misunderstood the market. I wouldn’t put any of these kind of stupidty past them.

like?

I've been reading about the Supra and the Z4 since it came about a few years back. If you guys couldn't see this coming I don't know what to tell you......

btw I've read all 22 pages of this thread and a bunch of other threads, plus all the BMW threads. I am well informed on the two..........
So you know the Supra is getting a new engine?

I just saw that this thread got featured and this rendering was used as a preview. Does that mean these are the closest ones to the real thing?

Yes.

The front splitter and a few small details are a little different, but that is very close to the production car, according to the the source of the leak.

Apparently it looks even better in person, the proportions are supposedly very good.

How different is the splitter?

The whole reason BMW and Toyota did this together was to cut costs. Just because it was going to cut costs by doing it together doesn't mean they would be able to do any major individualization to each car, that would cost too much money which is why this is a joint venture in the first place. Of course some stuff will be different, like interior items and of course exterior styling, but to think the Supra would have its own, new or even majorly tweaked engine compared to the Z4 would be asinine. Not saying they won't/aren't coming out with one later, but you had to figure this first version of the mkv would be almost a Z4 clone.

But I hope we're all wrong....
BMW and Toyota came in with an idea to do a joint project to build a "said" vehicle. This will help cut cost by sharing the build blue prints and shared parts. However, within the contract was a detailed arrangement of shared application of BMW's and Toyota's patents. (basically usage of their proprietary applications)

Take a look at Subaru's and Toyota's contract... you can see no specific individualization of the vehicles besides what you stated (interior items and some minor exterior styling). Why? Car sales figure. It can totally place one vehicle out of competition.
Fe: Subaru's move to AWD or AWD STi for the BRZ (TRUE to Subaru's Identity) can place FRS out of the sales figures. Toyota said "F**K that sh*t. We own 15% of your shitty company. We are the largest automobile manufacturers' of the world. Sit down"

So Subaru subsided.

But, I hear from my source that this contract may not be the case. (please Jesus, Mohammad, Siddhartha, and whatever entity you wish upon)

So you know the Supra is getting a new engine?
I want to believe A70, however, it seems like it is just a tweaked B58. Direct and Port Injection running on Atkinson Cycle (F*CKS UP TORQUE CURVE)
There is a speculation of a hybrid version that will be released in the later years. This can fall into Toyota's public announcement of making every model, whether sedan, truck, suv or variants, a hybrid.

I believe in Tada and his team. I want the new Supra to be a success.

But how are those specs acceptable in it's class when a 10 year old 370Z platform gets you that for $17K less? You can buy a new Z for $30K all day long right now. Is the Supra name worth that much if a premium?
not to mention 370Z comes in manual and JDM accessories/wheels

The Nismo 370Z could be one of the last manual JDM RWD cars for a long time if ever...

My thoughts: Underwhelmed.

While this info is valid, it is not certain, and things like the weight seem far enough off from our estimates to either be exactly right, or totally wrong.

Judging from the power and torque numbers, I would say that the motor is suggested to be identical to the one we saw in the Z4 prototype. The weight is fairly close as well, maybe 50-100lbs lighter.

Overall the info here seems to suggest the car is more of a GT car than the sports car we initially thought, which should please some people, however, it is definitely underpowered out the gate if it comes with 335hp@3300lbs. The possibility for the car to have the US-spec Z4 tune is there, and in that case it would make a more respectable 382hp, but that's simply speculation.

Conclusion: Toyota, please don't fuck this up. PLEASE. Not when we're this close to the finish line.
I've made a decision last week and went ahead and ordered a Nismo 370Z 2017 model year as I could get a great price for it. (10K down the retail price and they upped my trade in by 3K)
But if Toyota releases an updated lighter, sporty TRD or Gazoo-lite model I would look at it maybe in 2020-2021... but then the New 86 is also due then and its supposedly turbo (rumored) with manual option still.

The partnership with BMW is good for cost and developing a modern chassis with similar CoG as the M series but damn Toyota needs to keep JDM elements on it down the line.

No way the gap between the wheels and the wheel well is that small...
