It's exciting that this is finally coming, and I'm glad it is, I just don't see myself getting one. Maybe I'm old and stupid, but even in a fun car, rowing gears just doesn't sound fun to me. I had manual daily drivers and fun cars for years. The ZF8 is faster and smarter than I am on the road and track. Now I would be interested in the GRMN edition car, and if manual is the only way to get it, so be it...

Don’t want to get anyone in a hopeful tantrum….but my source stated, “it’s going to be able to hold 700nm out of the box.”

Just as a reference, the V160 was rated at ~500nm out of the box….and have seen numerous 1000lbft applications with no issues.

Also, for those T4R fans….the upcoming T4R is going to be a BEAST!

This leads me to the question of whether there will actually be a higher performance GRMN version of the A90, perhaps with the S58 that is in the new M2 and G8x M3 and M4. My guess is no but I also didn't think Toyota would make a manual Supra either.

I currently have an order for a 2022 TRD Pro. Wondering if I should hold out for the 2023 model now ?
Hold on if you can….trust me, hold on. I just sold my 2021 Rubicon 2dr when I found out .

Surely they would not offer the manual for the 2.0 and not the 3.0. From a company that seems decently logical, Id have a hard time wrapping my head around that.
I'd hope not. But then again, Ford only makes the Bronco stick in the smaller 2.3L engine if I'm not mistaken

Ford uses the manual on a 2.3L for the sole purpose of load rating. They have a Getrag (made in China not Germany) that from what ive read, isn’t very “stout.” Behind a 2.7TT, it would shred the transmission gears. My Rubicon had a factory AISIN manual that was made in Japan, actually same 6spd as the Tacoma’s.

Glad a mod was able to move these into 1 thread. I think 3-4 threads just popped up with the same exact article.
Yup, let's try and keep all the manual talk in one place until we get more concrete info or an official press release. When and if that happens, feel free to break off into a new official manual thread.

Thanks for the heads up!

Regarding the MT Supra, honestly I'm one of those who was waiting, hoping for a MT, but then got impatient when i test drove the ZF8 and the dealer offered me a good deal. I do hope they release it, because people deserve to have the option, but i do think it would give me quite a dilemma to think about. The ZF8 is great, but coming from all my previous cars having a MT, i miss the driver engagement of a true MT.

There's no denying the performance of the ZF tho. Other than govt regulations, etc, theres a reason most high end performance cars are going away from manuals. Porsche for example, offers the GT3 and GT4 in 6spd manuals, but the RS models, GT2 and Turbo models exclusively with PDK.

Either way, it'll be interesting to see what they release. Hopefully it wont make me regret buying my car ?

Yeah there is no doubt the ZF is a engineering marvel. It’s why alot of tuners are trying to find auto solutions for the MKIV (6R80, etc…). Anyone who thinks a manual car can outrun an auto (like for like power) is in over their head. The only upside to a manual is the driving pleasure….it’s hard to beat the enjoyment level of driving stick.

^^ This. There is no question that the ZF8-8HP, Porsche's various PDK's and other modern dual clutch and conventional automatics produce faster 0-60 times and generally faster lap times over manual versions of vehicles with more or less the same power to weight ratios as the auto/DCT cars they are compared to.

But manual cars are just really fun and engaging. I daily drive a manual car with a twin disc clutch. It's certainly not for everyone but it's tons of fun to enjoy and I love it on the street. Conversely if I had a car that I primarily intended to campaign in a racing class I'd probably go for a model or build a setup that uses a much more modern transmission that shifts VERY quickly because then the entire point would be to use every advantage allowed in the class rules in order to have the best chance to make the best lap time and best final position.

On the street though I absolutely love a manual transmission and prefer it.

I think it's awesome we'll have both choices soon... which is really how it should have been from the start but so long as they're doing it for a few production years it's fine now.

Imagine if the Supra got a direct-drive like the Regera...
I expect something like this eventually... maybe not even in the A100 (which is more likely to be a gas-electric hybrid with Mazda) but perhaps in whatever an A110 would be in the future. Still, Porsche made a fairly good case for having more than one speed for their Taycan EV. I can see a similar choice being made for a future Supra model series in the 2030's.

We're quite a way off from that in a near-future Supra, however I *would* expect to see how Toyota will weigh in on direct drive vs 2-speed or 3-speed automated gearboxes with their future high performance Lexus EVs.
