If the new Supra does indeed come with a BMW motor, woud you still buy the car?

Hm I wonder how BMW fans feel about this news. Presumably it'll be the M3/M4 engine that gets used in the Supra, and the first time that a M engine is used in a non-BMW car? And there's a big chance it'll be in a car that outperforms the BMW that shares its engine. I can totally see BMW M4 owners being pissed everytime they see MKV Supra with the same engine but in a faster application.

Which leads me to believe that somehow this is a baseless rumor, or that it won't even be a full-blown M engine.

the M3/M4 are heavier and more luxury. i dont think people are going to be cross shopping between a lighter sportier Supra and the M3/M4.

so far MT has been spot on when it comes to FT1's development. so for right now ill believe what they are reporting. BMW's I6 with around 485-518hp and 2,900lbs.

That makes sense to me too but then how are they going to convince people to pay $60k+ for a Supra that has the same engine as a BMW 335i. :what:
Yep! I don't know...

If it's got an M engine then it's going to carry an M pricetag. And if it's got the M pricetag, might as well buy the M.

Honestly though the appeal of this car is that it would be faster than stuff like the M4, for a similar or possibly smaller pricetag. If it loses that, it loses appeal (at least to me).

Thing is, BMW has no such I6 engine. To get that much power, you have to get the V8 in the M5 or M6 which is pushing 6 figures. Given their incremental shifts, I can't see them going from 425 to 500 horsepower in their midrange M cars. I just can't see BMW developing some new, more powerful engine to drop into a Toyota that will undercut their own BMW lineup. Also, BMW's new carbon platform sportscar offering (be it the Z5, Z5M, new M car or whatnot) may not be heavier.

There is no reasonable likelihood for us to get a 500 horsepower BMW engine in the Supra. BMW doesn't have the motor, and if they did they wouldn't give it to Toyota for peanuts.

But I would love to be proven wrong.

doesnt BMW underrate their HP? does anyone know how much power the M4 really makes? ad some electric motors for a higher total combine HP? or maybe Toyota will add its own touch to the S55 some other way? idk, it just seems that MT has been right so far. so who am i to doubt their report.

Good points!

What if the inline turbo six that's being speculated isn't the M3/M4's S55 but the upcoming M2's tuned-up N55 engine, only even more tuned up (either by BMW or Toyota) for the Supra??

Info on that engine - http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1079552

Yea M cars are always underrated. The M3/M4 dyno'd at 421whp and 410wtq with STD correction.

^ I agree. For all we know BMW may just be supplying just the block and Toyota will supply the rest. Or it may be an M4 engine and Toyota may tweek a few things to make it better and more reliable. This can help BMW as well learning what the Japenese can do/change to make their engine more powerful and also not losing reliability. I hope this is the case rather than a full BMW engine.

This could all be true but most people will overlook the details and call it a BMW engine, like they just stuck a M4 engine in the Supra and called it a day. And who knows, maybe they did but I'll wait for all the details before passing judgment.

That's what I hope too. Toyota needs to put their fingerprints all over this engine or the Supra will be stigmatized as just a Toyota shell with a BMW M3/M4 engine and BMW CF platform underneath, even if that engine and platform are awesome
