I know there's been a lot of talk about how much the MKV looks nothing like the FT-1, how it looks more like the 86, etc., so I thought it would be interesting to do some comparisons of the different angles of these cars to see how similar/dissimilar they actually are. Other than the headlights and the tail lights (and even then, I think it's slight), I don't think that the MKV and 86 really have that much in common. The Supra is clearly a slimmed-down, shortened version of the FT-1 (and has even been advertised as being based on that car, so it's no surprise there). What do you all think?

I am happy with the end result, it takes design elements from the previous Supras as well as the 2000GT and the Sports 800

I think it's clear that Supra is based on the FT-1 and the pictures above show it. I'm glad they didn't go for a full FT-1 (with associated price tag, 100k+ I would guess).

Many people would have gladly paid that for a true Toyota sports car

I think if they could have at least made their own chassis (for more FT-1 like proportions and body) but left the engine BMW, and brought it around 80k, I'd like to think it would have been in a pretty good spot, but at 80k you are genuinely into C8 LT2 even LT3 territory. On top of that, you are then more expensive than a non-GT4 Cayman with performance upgrades. I still stand by the fact that it probably wouldn't be worth it for Toyota to make their own inline 6 when BMW can provide a proven engine. I would wager that once you get into 100k+ territory, you just assume you're competing with a larger price bracket because the brackets seem to be wider once you get to that point. Like someone might be willing to spend 120k to get a Mercedes AMG GT or something like that over a Supra that's 100k. Just my thoughts on the matter.

I like what we have now, but I completely agree that something closer to the FT-1 would have been even better. The unfortunate fact of the matter is that Toyota is probably never going to make their own sports car again with the exception of maybe an EV, but that's a big shot in the dark by me. They simply don't want or really need to get into that market.

FT-1 proportions would have looked better but being longer and wider would have meant it handles and performs worse in pretty much every way, but looked better.

Personally I'm very happy with the proportions of the current MkV and have seen it parked next to a MkIV, doesn't look too different side by side size wise. I'd take the extra performance over looks any day.

Like with the A80? :p
I mean... the A80 came to market in the US during a pretty crappy time economically speaking, but that isn't the case now though with this car.

Yes us old farts remember the 90s pretty well. Idk, even the LC500 is falling short of it's targeted sales goal. I'm not arguing that a reskin Lexus LC with Toyota's new TT-V6 wouldn't be sweet, but idk how much of a commercial success it would be.

I'm actually planning to buy the LC500 over the MKV. I finally got to see the MKV in person, but it didn't do anything for me. Plus, it doesn't help that the Toyota dealer near me has it listed for $87K. I think it's a cool car, but definitely prefer the GT car. Now if I can just have the willpower to hold off for a couple of years haha

you have to remember a 100k+ car will never get off the ground. Remember the R35 and NSX were both pre-GFC cars - and hence them hanging onto the platform and investment for so long.

US dealers charging over retail still blows my mind.... such a foreign concept

To be fair, these days anyone can get into a loan for way more than they should. I'm sure there's a lot of people who technically can get into an 80k car, but not as many who should/can truly afford such. I agree with you though, this car should not be a penny over sticker.

In regards to MA617M's comment, I think brand perception and demographic has a bigger effect than most people realize on what that manufacturer can make. For example, the GT-R at the end of the day is a Nissan, a company primarily known for ordinary cars, so alot of people may skip the GT-R if they can get a "more prestigious" brand. Most of the people with money look at cars as a status symbol, and will probably opt for a brand rather than the individual merits of the car.

Since the MkIV didn't sell that well (due to many factors outside of itself), I'm wondering if Toyota was just not willing to take the risk on making the the MkV on their own, or at least with less collaboration to save costs. While Toyota could probably sell the car at a loss, I'm sure top management would never approve of that.

I went to the Top Gear cars and coffee event this weekend with my MKV. For an event full of exotics and the rare hyper cars (Senna, Jesko, Agera, TDF), my MKV and other MKV drew quite a crowd. These were a bunch of ppl who were skeptical about the car. I let them sit in it and rev'd it. Almost everybody immediately smiled and were excited about this platform's future. I also was parked next to a red MKIV which showed a proper side by side. Some people asked about how do I feel about the BMWness. I told them BMW had made performance monsters so it doesn't bother me. Especially knowing they did it to make the car more affordable.

I feel this car is priced about 5-8k too high. The FT1 I was willing to spend 80-100k "for a toyota". I really hate that "but it's a ______" comment, but when you draw more ppl than an m5 for half the price, it really makes me laugh. The FT1...psh forget about it. It would've sold at a higher price because I know plenty of GTR guys who would've pulled the trigger on one. We all know how well the GTR sold/sells.

I love my MKV and have zero regrets about this platform. Ton of fun to drive!
