How often are you guys changing oil that it's that important that oil is available local on a whim?

I order my Motul 8100 X-Cess from Amazon and get it in a day or two.

I posted this before but I'll post it again:
You make an excellent point lol Oil changes don't just spring up on you. Motul is gonna have to be the way to go then.

I have changed after every track day only because I’ve been over 300°F every track day and don’t know how the car handles it. Car is new to me so, 4 track days total, first day I didn’t have any vehicle logs.

I’ve been sending analysis off to Blackstone as well, and have one back, one still awaiting analysis, and am about to ship off one from this last weekend. Here’s my report from the first one. The viscosity is a “curioisity,” they say. Super curious to see if we find a trend once I get the 2nd and 3rd reports back, and if it looks different once I switch to the LL-01

No right or wrong but damn that’s a lot of oil changes. I start thinking about it every 5k miles. Done that for over 15 years of tracking. No issues yet. At least not with oil. Am I missing something with this B58 engine that’s different? And we’re cooking 🥵 down here in FL as well.

I agree, but again, it's only because the oil has been getting so hot for me. If Blackstone says it looks good then I'll leave it for a few track days.

I came from a 2020 ZL1 1LE. It had an oil life tracker that accounted for hard driving / track use. It was regularly 280-290 F easy, and that's perfectly acceptable on those. I would pretty much change the oil when it told me to which ended up being around 2500 miles of mostly track use or 3-4 track days I'd say. I plan to do about the same in the Supra, but I need to see how the engine is doing with those temps first for peace of mind.

OT: Were you running 0w-40 or 15w-50 in the ZL1?

And FWIW I'm shocked by your oil temps in the Supra. I ran 20 min sessions in 90° heat and humidity and never saw higher than 260ish.

So, this is all awesome info and has been helpful. I'm about ready to do my first oil change on my '23 and was planning on Liquid Moly 5w30 special tech, but this thread has me thinking differently.

I'm in central FL, so cold weather doesn't exist 😂 But I drive the car hard and plan on occasional track events.

What would be the recommendation you'll have for weight? And is there a better option that's more easily attainable at most automotive stores vs having to order LM?
I'm only running the 5W-30 Special Tech because I drive my car in sub-freezing weather. If I were in Florida I'd be running Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W-40 and call it a day.

That said, the 5W-30 Special Tech will probably work just fine for your intended application.

15w-50 Mobil 1 *for the ZL1*.

I, too, am shocked with the temps.

i'm going with Castrol Edge 5w30 (non-euro) because it meets API SP and ACEA C2 ratings. C5 is a mid SAP oil. C2 is the same as C5 but with higher HTHS ratings. This is why C5 oils are 0w20 and C2 are 5w30.

Don't think it meets BMW LL01 or LL04 tho. You'll want that as I believe it's important for the timing chain.

Go with the Euro

Based on what I know, if you're catless you don't need to worry about the ACEA C5 designation, because the key objective of C5 is to be much easier on three-way catalysts as small amounts of it are consumed by the turbocharged engines. So I would (and am going to) throw that aspect out the window myself.

Spot on! I’m on the overkill Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W-40. If I cook that oil, I’ve got bigger issues to deal with.

From FCP Euro: ”New BMW's fitted with BXX series engines (B58, B48, etc) "require" 0W-20 LL14FE+ Rated oils. WE DO NOT RECOMMEND using this spec! The levels of protection LL14FE provides are much lower than bmw’s previous standard LL01. The new formulation LL14FE is mainly designed with CAFE ratings, EPA requirements and fuel mileage in mind, NOT OVERALL PROTECTION. We recommend LL01 rated oils for increased engine protection and shear resistance.“

Interesting note/recommendation from FCP.

Bumping thread because this should be stickied and search engine sucks ass.

Anyways, the LL Special Tec 5w30 LL01 seems to be the winner for me based on all the information in this thread and recommendations. It hits the temperatures I need for my climate. 0F-95F, and its LL01 properties, HTHS of 3.5.

So they are saying to use 5-30 vs the 0-20?

I have been using a great 5-30 for some time now. When I changed over to it the engine became quieter and ran smoother. I noticed this immediately. I personally would not go back to 0-20.

This is what I changed to some time back:
