New video up today. I talk about something I just learned about and what it could mean for those who think their mods are not going to impact their warranty. Then I take you along to see some amazing cars at the OKC Coffee and Cars event for July.

I don't understand why this is ever a point of contention. If you start modding a cars engine past the factory specs you are inherently introducing additional longevity risks. It should be obvious to anyone that manufacturers are doing anything in their power to store peak values to a table somewhere in an effort to ensure if you blow your engine up they aren't giving you a free one for something that isn't technically their fault.

You should assume the second you do anything to increase your power your drive train warranty is gone. You've taken a gamble in the name of speed and if you don't have the cash to play stay out of the carsino.

You’re right, but you missed the point I was trying to get out there. A lot of people have been led to believe that piggyback tunes are not detectable if they have been removed and that is not the case.

I have a piggyback but am just waiting for the ECU to be unlocked so I can go Ecutek and get more out of the car. I agree, don’t do mods if you can’t afford the consequences.

Just FYI, not everything is durability related. Many things get limited per emissions, cost, etc. You can run at higher temp, but get corresponding rad/cac/etc for it..

The ECU records everything out of the norm. Boost pressure, you name it. The tune or piggyback might not be detected, but the effect of them will. If the engine is ran consistently outside of BMW's parameters, they'll know it's been tampered with. And warranty will be denied.

I sort of wonder if Toyota is going to come out with a tune for sale or something. I say this because I’m on their Supra customer research list and a couple of weeks ago one of the surveys included some interesting question. Included in the questions (if Inremember correctly) was whether or not I had tuned my car, whether or not I had considered it, and would I buy a manufacturer tune from the manufacturer. Anyway, the questions seemed like market research on the marketability of a tune.

If they were do to that, it would be interesting to see what it actually provides in term of gains. There is so much capability with this engine.

However, the cost from the manufacturer would likely be obscene!

Definitely possible... also possible they're considering what Intel did with CPU overclocking... i.e. offering a much more expensive "specialty warranty" that you could buy. So your factory warranty would be voided upon tuning... but if you handed them an extra $5K at purchase (and signed a waiver denying coverage for aftermarket parts damage) then they would still cover the engine itself if it failed on a tuned car.

APR Performance have had a limited powertrain warranty-backed tune available for select Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche and VW models since 2017. Not sure why BMW hasn't.

It's ironic that Tada designed a vehicle meant to be modded, yet we're being penalized for it.

Regardless, I'm having trouble keeping the stock power down on my '20 Supra with OEM PSS tires, so I doubt I'll be tuning anytime soon anyway - especially if I go with all-seasons next.

I hope a manufacturer warranty backed tuning option becomes available. I know Ford Performance offers plug and play tunes for their Mustang, Ranger, and Focus ST, and BMW dealers install Dinan tunes which have factory-matching warranties.

It would be great if the GR Sports exhaust sold in Japan would be sold in the US at a fair price (hopefully as a full catback), and then perhaps also GR Sports intake and lowering springs. They've done TRD and F-Sport intakes, exhausts, lowering springs, big brake kits, and even superchargers before, so having a full suite of parts with warranties would be great.

I would gladly pay for a manufacture tune if it offered good performance gains and some sort of warranty. Even if it didn’t, I may still consider it if it was deemed “safer”. What price would I pay? $2500 max.

If there was an “official” GR tune available with reasonable gains at a fair price, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

Not that I’m feeling like I need more power though. I’m very happy with the stock(-ish) balance of power/handling I have now.
