New Toyota Supra rumored to get Toyota twin turbo V6 engine

they dont intend to compete with those sales, especially with a niche product whose segment has been empty at Toyota since 1998 in the U.S. (2002 in JP)

the philosophy behind the car is almost exactly the same as the 86. Make the car handle well, keep it as light as possible, and in this case add some more power.


~400hp in a car that weighs ~3100lbs is not bad at all; 86 is 2700lbs with 200hp.

Dude, they discontinued the Supra because it wasn't selling enough. I for one don't want that to happen again...so I'm of the opinion that it should be priced with some sense instead of to placate the unrealistic desires of armchair enthusiasts...

Totally different mindset since Akio has taken over, but I dont disagree with your mindset. More power to compete with is always good by me.

in 2016, the Toyota 86 sold somewhere around 8000 units. The Mustang sold 105,932.....

furthermore, the Subaru BRZ sold about 5000...

Wait, so they sold 105,932 Mustangs. But how many of those were the 400+hp GTs? That's what we are comparing to, right? Sure the GT still sold more, but it may not be as lopsided as it may seem from those numbers. Unless even the V6s are faster than the BRZ, I don't know, they may be.

My thought is this. Even if Toyota was making a direct competitor to the Cayman/Cayman S, and if true that the base price is $65k, then I think Toyota didn't think things through. The only reason why the Cayman costs what it does today, is because of Porsche's reputation with the car. The Cayman started out at a much lower cost and wasn't the idolized road weapon it is today. Through the decades, Porsche has refined it and the brand has become synonymous with making impeccable sports cars once more. With that rise in reputation, so did the prices, as well as costly options added and customizability.

Which brings me to the point about the Supra. The Supra has been out of the game for quite some time, Toyota is not really known for their amazing sports cars and they are going to compete in an already crowded market. While also considering the used market, they would have an extremely hard time convincing someone to gamble and buy a Supra at that price, not knowing how it will hold it's value and probably some guy who spent $15k less than you on a Camaro/Mustang/etc, just blew past you on the highway with his cheap bolt ons.

I agree with many others here, that the low 50s is an area where they can carve some market out, where it would retain enough value to comfort buyers into getting a brand new car, that they might have some cash to upgrade it down the road, and that they can drive the stink out of it and not feel like it is required to be a garage queen.

During development, no, not even in the slightest. Before and after and development they do research and try to listen to popular opinions, but the reason they just came to the U.S. and did the meet and greet was to hear the ideas people think embody the Supra.

plenty of people said to make sure it had as much power as possible, manual, etc and all we can do is hope that made an impression. I argued for the same things, but my information is already 1.5 months old, which can be ages in car development.

Maybe it has 400hp+ now and maybe theyre testing manuals? who knows.
