Thanks to those that contributed to this thread - I was dealing with clunky noise for a year too on low speed uneven roads.

Cleaned up the parts/area and added fresh grease, its been a few weeks so far no issues.

Did you remove the top cover with 3 holes? I thought this is the part one was supposed to tighten, in order to get rid of clunking noise. I'm going to dealership at the end of the month in order to have a look at my steering gear.

The grease goes hard so stopping the plastic thrust bush moving freely to take up any slak so causing the clunking. ... small adjustments in the screw cap will move the bush so helping identifying the issue .. THEN you can remove the cap and spring and bush regrease and reinstall carefully noting the original position of the cap to ensure correct tension is returned.

2 years on my clunking has not returned

ANyone heard a clunk noise coming from the footwell ? Sounds like a reverse gear lock out grind noise on manual car?

exactly the same thing happens to me now, the noise from the rear. Obviously it’s not from the coilovers I just installed it, I’m pretty sure they didn’t tighten the bolts properly. I’m going to find out what exactly caused the issue and update you here.

Did you have the noise like on this video:
I'm currently experiencing this noise while turning the steering wheel like on the video, engine is OFF. There's no clunking at all during driving or steering wheel maneuvering with engine ON, even when vehicle is parked. Next week I'm going to dealership to have it examined under the warranty. Just in case they need to replace this bushing, I think this is a correct PN from BMW: 32106891974. It's better to be prepared before going to Toyota dealership with BMW car ;)

I'm still having a small issue with "metal" noise coming from the left front. I bought this 3 pin adjusting tooling and slightly increased the preload. I did approx. 100km and I think noise was gone however the steering wheel was not going back to the original position as easily as I would like, therefore I had to slightly decrease the spring load again. After that, noise is back (rarely but it's audible) but it only appears when driving slowly on the flat, good condition road ... yes, weird. There's absolutely no "metal" noise of any kind when driving on the bad roads, gravel, speed bumps of any shape, spirited driving on curvy roads. I already checked wheels balance, suspension and did the alignment in the dealer ship, therefore I'm 99% sure the suspension itself is OK. Recently I had a one time situation when driving 5km/h over a transverse shallow "groove" in the asphalt I felt a direct hit through the steering column, never experienced anything like that before on any car. Supra has only 21k km.

Do you guys think I shall try to put more FB-1 grease into the pinion? Was it easy to remove the piston?

Next week I have scheduled a 2 year warranty maintenance at the dealership so maybe they will figure out something, they have a person trained in Supra's maintenance.

I think the best advice is to adjust the screw (tighten slightly) ... if it makes a difference great ... if it comes back then note the postilion of the screw ... remove it/spring and bush and clean out the old grease .. regrease with FB-1 ( loads of it on rack/bush/spring) and reinsert ... tightening to SAME place as original

I agree the steering feels so much more responsive thats cos the bush is now moving freely and constantly keeping torque on the pinion/rack at all steering input amounts ...

Removing the screw was easy ... i did it under the car ( removing the skid plates ) ..

I reckon a lot of guys are unnecessarily changing suspension parts when its not the suspension that is the issue.

NOTE: DO NOT USE THE BMW EPS REPAIR KIT ( Part No. 32106891974 ) AS THE BUSH DOES NOT FIT THE SUPRA ( or Z4)

but u can use the screw cap from the kit ( i did)

Note use FB-1 grease as this is designed for Thysenn-krupp EPS racks.

No way the rack should be that dry ... i rekon there will be a recall eventually when the pinion skips cogs on the rack and someone has a BIG accident !!
Hello!I would like to ask if the FB-1 grease mentioned is the one in my picture?Thankyou!

OK guys, I am going to bump this thread.
BIG thanks for @RAWSupra for chasing this down.

My 2022 3.0 Premium US Spec Supra had 25,000 miles. The last 6 months I have been chasing a knocking sound. Low speed, rough roads, coming to a stop, and turning the steering wheel left and right... clunk, knock, knock, clunk. And the noise can be felt through the steering wheel.

I swapped out the upper AND lower control arms (yes, spent some cash there) and even pulled my ceramic pads and went back to stock.

NO LUCK.

Found this thread and thought there is NO WAY this is the knocking sound.
BUT after doing the same job on my 2015 BMW 435i, I thought it was a cheap try for the price of the grease and 3 prong tool (about $35). Add $10 if you don't have a 90-degree pair of pliers.

I got under, removed the under tray, marked the rack cover and removed the bushing.
It wasn't "bone"dry, but let's say it barely got my fingers greasy. I paper towel cleaned the bushing, internal rack and then gooped the HELL out of the U of the bushing. I also lightly greased the bushing sides and o-ring and gooped the spring ends where it connects to the bushing and tensioning cover. Reinstalled back to how it was originally adjusted using my markings.

Started the car and pulled into my brick driveway.

WHISPER QUIET.

Before it used to clunk, clunk, clunk as I pulled out. Nothing.
It IS like a new car.

And if I am telling the truth, I was actually thinking about selling the Supra because that sound was maddening!
