I see that, yes. And in addition I like how they're showcasing the 1998-2005 Altezza RS200 sedan in this episode. This would fall right into line with the rumors that a four-door variant of the GR86 is in the works... since it is being based off the current (and soon to be outgoing) RWD Lexus IS platform. That's the Se under the covers. Akio is the current Chairman of the board. It’s him and his board of directors that approves car projects and then the CEO is delegated the authority to make it happen.I don't see an MR2 happening, sure there was a Mid engine concept car not too long ago but the issue is Akio isn't the head of Toyota anymore, so even if he and the GR team gives the green light, Toyota still has to approve it. And with them really behind the curve on EVs, despite manufactures shifting away from fully committing on EVs, every manufacturer still need some investment into EVs, and Toyota still has to do that. BZ4X is a disaster with the Subaru collaboration and I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota/Subaru partnership begin fading away. This means I personally believe in more that a new GR86 using the 3 cyl turbo is more likely to happen.
The other consideration is that the Supra is actually a close competitor to the 718 upto the GTS trim level in terms of performance, some do cross shop between 718 (especially S) and Supra despite the price gap (myself included). MR2 would have to fit below the Supra, so altho it has MR layout, it would likely not able to match the performance of most 718s, maybe the match base 718? But a GR86 already sort of match the performance of a base 718. GR86 is performing too high (compared to back in the day AE111) for a MR2 to fit in easily these days.
But that being said, if the MR2 is an EV, it could be a more likely to happen, and that would match the 718 going EV. And would have minimal effect on GR86 and Supra sales.
As a Supra owner, I agree with this and it makes the most sense. This would be a great very car if all was true.My guess is the MR2 will take the place of the Supra when it goes out of production.
Best car has confirmed it and they are almost always right... They also confirmed it's going to be an all new 2.0T engine from Toyota that should have a very low center of gravity and be very compact.
My main worry si that they are talking about it being AWD. The GR-Four AWD is not suited for track use in its current state, it does not hold up in the GR Corolla...
That would be cool, but it still has me asking the question: What happens to the Supra if the MR2 is given more hp than the Supra? My guess would be that the new MR2 is going to get their new 2.0L 4 cylinder 395hp turbocharged engine, which is still under development and testing as Toyota said. While GR86 would get a facelift in 2026 and use G16E-GTS turbocharged engine which they are currently using it on GR Corolla & GR Yaris.
