Hey guys, just picked up a 6MT Supra and noticed the car's too quiet. They must've done a good job insulating it I guess.

From all the research I've done, it seems like sound quality and quantity are always a trade off - the louder setups are always raspy and usually sound like they have an exhaust leak. The refined ones are always quiet (AWE Resonated Touring is my favorite tone so far but I'm told it's barely louder than stock. The NON res has a little rasp).

My challenges:
1) I'm overseas and can't experiment with different exhaust setups due to shipping charges. Once my card is swiped I'm pregnant.

2) As she's my daily: I can't afford any CEL and won't risk it with cat replacements - no decent tuners around either. I don't want incompetent mechanics touching O2 sensors.

Any recommendations for a loud but refined sounding setup without messing with cats? Thanks for the help!

People are obviously going to recommend what they already purchased, so it's probably best that you list all of the setups that you have already ruled out and the reasoning. That way we can get an idea of what you want before blindly suggesting things

I hear you on that, I'm tempted to start the experiment with AA's high flow cats if I can find a decent mechanic that knows what they're doing

The problem with all these youTube video's is that most of the cars have aftermarket DPs, intakes and tunes as well - so you really dont get a fair comparison.

Installing a DP is fairly straightforward job. Watch a couple of youtube videos and you can do it yourself.

just do some catted downpipe with the AWE setup you like the tone of. It will be loud enough.

catless is the raspy part, so avoid that. At full load it sounds epic, but definitely like an exhaust leak at low speeds ?

I suggest seeing if you can go to a meetup and listen for yourself. No online video will be accurate enough.

I've bought exhausts sight unseen, installed on a Sunday, removed by Monday... because it droned like a needy girlfriend that's mad because you forgot your first date anniversary.

Most popular downpipe: Active Autowerke catted downpipe. We have the new AA catted downpipes and GESI cats.

Exhausts: AWE touring & HKS Hi-Power are very popular.

I went with magnaflow x-mod. I run no resonator and I love it. Quiet while cruising. Get loud when you want it to

I ran xmod Catback with no mufflers (straight pipe inserts) and stock DP and it was great. But wasn’t loud enough for me. So now I run catless AA with xmod, muffler left side, straight valve side. It’s fantastic now. It has a CeL so what… does nothing. I’ll probably get a jb4 soon though.

AWE touring res + AA catted downpipe will give you the volume level you want without the rasp. Another good option is their catted downpipe + their catback. Another good option with minimal rasp is the AWE track with the stock downpipe. The lack of mufflers give you the volume but the resonators control rasp, especially with a stock downpipe.
