I think you guys are misunderstanding why people like the Miata. It's not because it's a blazing fast quarter-mile slayer. People like the Miata because it's one of the last (mostly) pure sports cars. It's a small, light-weight, two-door coupe/convertible. There really aren't many of those still being made in this age of giant SUV's and pickups.

The Miata isn't my cup-of-tea, but I respect it for what it is.
Having been alive for and a license holder for all generations when released, I do not misunderstand why people seem to elevate them so much. I’m not even talking about power when I say they are over hyped turds.

The S2K is the same formula and not an over hyped turd.

Story time! Back when I had my Rx7 and was getting some work done to it, a friend of mine let me borrow his '91 manual Miata while my Rx7 was in the shop. To this day, despite owning an Rx7, a MK5 Supra, and a 3.8 Genesis Coupe R-Spec over the years, I still had a ton of fun driving that slow little Miata (arguably more fun than the more powerful cars).

Idk...like I said...it's not really my cup of tea, and I would never buy one, but I get why people like the Miata. They're just fun little roadsters.

I agree, I just think they are way over hyped. When people constantly state "The answer is always Miata" I have to eye roll, it is def not always the answer.

Currently I would buy a twin over a miata any day of the week.

If the 2JZ was the main reason for the MKIVs popularity, why aren't all these other shitboxes up in lights? I'm just throwing it out there, but I think just maybe it has something to do with them not being in a lame movie franchise.
None of those are sports cars. In your same logic, the MKV future value will be no greater than a M340i.

I think M.I.A.T.A. (Miata Is Always The Answer) is just a little tongue and cheek thing they say to be cute. They know their little car is slow and girly looking.

It is fun to drive though. There's something about being able to push a car to its limits without being too worried about wrapping yourself around a pole. Going all-out in my other cars is dangerous. In the Miata, it just feels like you're safely playing around in an oversized go-kart.

Unless you plan to buy new and keep it in a bubble with zero mileage, buying Supra new and driving it for a few years the value will go down slowly at best. If you want to make money wait for a used one in cherry condition near The bottom of the market. My BS guess would be low 30s for low millage if we in a bad economy.
as for a usable toy, I buy A Supra to enjoy life as a 2nd car. Resale value did play a part in my purchase but it was more towards value retention, not profiting. These Supra depreciates slower than a charger.

interesting view point....so why is every sport car in the world trying to be as fast as it can be for the price point. I think the Miata is in the great gas mileage club and top down for the non performace car.

This is why I kept my NC Miata. It weighs 2600 lbs, making it highly fun (top down, of course) on tight, curvy roads.

dave ramsay is okay for people that are awful at personal finance/self-discipline, but his guidelines are almost never the optimal way to do things
I did almost the Ramsey way, once you hit step 7 there really isn’t any stress in your life, everything is covered with cash. All problems I used to think was a big deal is not even a bump in the road Today. Your not going out the way to save a nickel or arguing over a 1% interest.
not the most optimal but definitely makes life less stres.

If you mean a percentage of the original retail price, then yes, you're probably right!

You could maybe add a few points for the Supra being a "Sports car" but otherwise, I'd venture it depreciates at a similar rate. And if we are being fair, we should probably deduct some points for it being a pretend BMW - the enthusiast car market (which you are leveraging here) hates that.

So essentially, unless we get very lucky and something external causes our cars to hold or even go up in value - think world wide pandemic; a movie franchise; the end of ICE cars; some weird shortage; the somewhat premature end of production; etc., the Supra MKV will likely depreciate at a relatively normal (sports) car rate.

In any case, It's great to see a different opinion.. and for all of our sake's, I sincerely hope I'm dead wrong and the value of our MKVs go to the moon!

Yes, I understand the overhyped issue with the Miatas for sure. And it may also be related to the fact that there are a million of them out there and they are also one of the cheapest ways to get into some fun racing.
And the same way that @R1Outcast said it, after driving my FD RX7 plus many other sports cars, I drove the NC Miata and was impressed at how much fun it was and how connected you feel to the road. That besides the nice addition of having a top that you can lower during sunny days.
But definitely not a fast car.... until you add a 2.5 liter turbo engine to it and make over 250WHP and then it becomes and amazing little sportscar that can compete with Porsche Boxsters, M3's, etc.
BUT you are always nervous of something breaking or exploding (as with any other highly modified older car of course) and that is why I decided to buy the Supra.

I share the same sentiments as others here regarding the Miata...It was gutless but fun as hell to drive in the twisties!
