Data point:

1 day @ Homestead Miami Speedway

  • Open Track - $339.15 (no cost for additional driver + can add $1m liability for $75)
  • Hagerty - $370.58 (no cost for additional driver)
  • Lockton - $287.65 (not considered for me since I don't see an obvious way to add a second driver)

My perspective on any insurance is "insure what you can't afford (i.e. willing to pay cash for) to replace".

Also, I didn’t know this on my first track day but I could have got a second day for a good discount (-1/2 I think) which I wish I would have done.

Some will offer 1 price for 1-4 consecutive days. I currently have a yearly with OT, but when I was looking at Lockton I could do ~14 weekends (~28 days) for the same price.

shoot. I was referring to the free track day itself - could’ve gota second day for about half.

I can see the one price for 1-3 days of insurance. Once you crash and not drivable - you won’t be crashing more

Well said. For 1st timers out there, you’d think they’d offer a discount rate. Or even discounts for those with a clean record - street incidents, tickets, etc.

Lockton annual sounds nice. Thinking for myself, if you could set the amount you want to insure. I wonder if any of them offer insurance for all vehicles & umbrella ? Be nice to have liability w/out comprehensive & collision (assuming no loans ofc) and track for one car.

I could see the exact opposite. Between young drivers that think they're going to set a course record on their first session, and old dudes that perpetually drive under the speed limit and just got their first vette. One of them intentionally ignores black flags, the other one is selectively blind to Blue flags. Neither one of them have any idea what their limits are, and some poor sap is getting sandwiched between them.

Ugh, my first track day was all of this.

The dude with the modded 911 S who went off twice trying to set lap records and wouldn't let anyone pass.

The C8 driver who didn't want to get above 3k rpms.

luckily black/blue flags were pointed out by the instructor. But I've been in some solo groups where I'm sitting in pit lane waiting for the 'newly promoted' to actually see the waving black flag and join us all.

Just did a comparison, figured I might as well write it down somewhere. Ozark International with NASA, 2-day non-TT HPDE. $60k value for all, single event coverage.

Lockton: 579
Hagerty (10% deduct): 569
Opentrack: 466
Ontrack: 426
Damn
. after adding all that up every track weekend, pays (save$) to just get a beater and send it. Racingjunk.com

That’s really the key = why I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving a chunk of serious life savings on track. It’s all relative. Dude in a Porsche GT3 RS or Ferrari hopefully is driving less than 2% of his net worth on track. My S2K took some hits, but nothing I couldn’t afford to fix ?

It adds up for sure. I’ve spent about $5-$6k a year on track insurance the last two years. I would save a little with yearly contracts but I’ve had enough cars break down during the season in the past that I am gun shy about locking in a yearly.

how are you getting 287.65 for Lockton? Everytime I try to get a quote from them its $508 for a single HPDE day lol. Open track is about 370. My Hagerty price is the same. Insuring 55k

I just checked Lockton and tried to insure 55,000 for Homestead and got $537.15 lol. People always tell me Lockton is the cheapest but Idk if I am doing something wrong?

EDIT: I just called Lockton and they told me that all HPDE policies are a 3 day minimum??? Does that sound right to you guys? The lady on the phone didn't seem very confident.

For those who do TT, it's worth noting that Lockton covers TT and is included in their quote. Hagerty is a separate box to check for TT and typically becomes more expensive than Hagerty when selected.

I also learned about lockton recently, a few folks in the paddock saying it was much cheaper than Hagerty for them ?‍♂

$ounds about right. If driving at Homestead, just drive off (straight) at turn 10 and you’ll be okay. That’s about the only turn people consistently fcuk up and eat tire wall. The rest, you’d have to drive like a complete jackass and try to hit something or be afraid of running off into the dirt.

That‘s just my opinion and why I wouldn’t buy track insurance there. If you’re thinking you might be driving beyond your limit, you probably are. So just go slower and practice in the rain whenever possible. It’ll make your dry car control so much easier and you’ll save a lotta coin in the process.

Also for that amount of money, you can pay for a pro (or semipro) to ride shotgun. They don’t want to wreck either, will keep you & your car safe. And make you way faster than if you were driving solo attempting to fix your own bad habits.
