So I know this is a joint project of sorts where Toyota and BMW will both build sports car or cars off the same platform but how close will the cars be? Are we looking at a FRS / BRZ kind of relationsihp where it's the same exact car mechanically but just different packaging and styling?

Or are we going to get very different cars that will only share a platform but have diffrent engines and suspension and transmission etc.?

From what I've read it's a flexible modular platform that's being co-developed and can be used not just for the Supra and Z5 but also other sports cars if the companies want to expand their lineup. It's not supposed to be a Toyobaru situation that's the same car rebadged.

What ever they do please no BMW engine in the FT1!
A Supra without a Toyota engine wouldn't be a Supra and I bet that would turn off a lot of Supra nameplate fans. = bad for sales.

I do'nt want anything from BMW other than their carbon fiber tech. Give us a CF chassis and then let the Toyota engineers do their work for the rest.

For one, the Supra will be a coupe and the Z4/Z5 are roadsters. Supra will be for true drivers and Z4/Z5 for hairdressors :) Kidding on the last part but the Supra should end up being the bigger performer if you look at the heritage and market that the two cars have had traditionally.

This exactly. Not a shared car, only a shared modular platform.

I wonder if the BMW and Toyota model will end up competing in the same exact segment and for the same buyers. Would be interesting to see that happen and then magazine shootouts pitting the fraternal twins against each other :catfight:

Definitely possible that there'll be some overlap in price and segment especially if BMW actually makes the Z4/Z5 perform well unlike the current models. Current Z4 is already $50k, so it's already in the ballpark price of what everyone here expects the Supra to be priced at. I think it'll come down to how hardcore of a performer the Z4/Z5 ends up being engineered to be.

The Z4 before current one was a cool driver's car, especially the coupe version but they like totally softened it too much for the current gen. Fact tht they didn't even put out a M model shows you that bmw didn't even think it was a very sporty car. I think they'll use this opportunity to make it a real driver's car again with this new platform.

I wonder tho if toyota and bmw will have a gentlemens agreement to equip, price, market their cars differently so they don't end up stealing each others sales.:hmm:

Buyer of a BMW convertible is pretty different demos than a buyer of a Toyota sports coupe.

Perhaps if they produce a Z5 M coupe there will be some overlap, but I can't foresee BMW offering as much horsepower in their M coupe as Toyota will in the Supra as it would undercut their other M lineup like M4 or possibly even the M6.

A BMW spokesperson has confirm that each company will be responsible for their own exterior design work, unlike with the 86/BRZ.

The way it should be. The companies aren't even somewhat affiliated like how Toyota has a stake in Fuji Heavy Industries (parent of Subaru). Plus one is Japanese and the other is German, which typically have very different designs.

A Z5 M coupe would be interesting but I can't imagine that BMW and Toyota have not discussed the possibility of competition based on this shared platform. I'm sure they have assured that they will be targeting different buyers. I agree that there should be a difference in power for no other reason than they have to worry about stepping on the toes of their M line. This will be Toyota's flagship after all.

The Supra is hybrid capacitor but the BMW is not. Should not be much overlap.

Dont think the Supra will be a hybrid but still shouldn't have much overlap with z4. Very different demographic of buyers.
