More than 87,000 BMW and Toyota vehicles are being recalled by BMW, according to a notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall for both brands is due to a fault in the car’s starter motor, which the notice says “may overheat" and increase the risk of it catching on fire. Officials said the issue is attributed to wear on an internal component.

Although the recall was initiated by BMW, some Toyota Supra vehicles are included in the recall as its powertrain was developed by the German automaker, according to Cars.com.

Owners of impacted vehicles are expected to receive notification letters on March 24, according to the notice. Affected cars will be able to get their engine starter replaced by dealers free of charge.

Here is what you need to know.

What BMW and Toyota vehicles are affected by the recall?
According to the notice, the following BMW and Toyota models and model years are included in the recall:

  • 2022-2023 BMW 230I
  • 2021-2024 BMW 330I
  • 2021-2024 BMW 430I

This has been floating around the intarwebs for a while and always seems to lack some crucial piece of information. I believe it is B48s only but there's too much misinformation/incomplete information floating around to know for sure.

for the record, there's a B58 one too. the only difference is they haven't confirmed the recall because there's no official fix. but they acknowledged that there is still an issue with the starters failing and potentially causing a fire.

Close friend of mine I got lunch with last week is a master tech at Toyota. He did this recall on a 2021 B58 car a couple of weeks ago (dealership car they got from another dealership). I told him its B48s only and he said it's not. I dont have anymore information on it but can try to see what he can dig up.

There might be another thread with the same subject? Either way, mostly B48's, also some B58's, including Supras. There's a VIN checker for anyone who wants to see if they are affected.

They replace the starter itself, located under the car. Fire hazard, apparently.

Some people have had it done, but seems like most are waiting and might be for a while.

My ‘21 didn’t come up on the recall list. Either way auto start-stop has been disabled since day one.

Now if a 5th gear slipping recall came up I would be all over it.

One wonders if this would even be an issue without auto start/stop.
this is part of the cause. the explanation from BMWs is that sometimes the car will struggle to start, presumably from a worn/old starter, but the starter will keep cranking for an extended period of time. originally there was just a software update to prevent the excessive cranking, but they still noticed some issues with vehicles that had the software update.

symptoms were difficulty starting, and when you drop the lower trim to access it, there may be burn marks on the undertray near the starter cable.

currently includes a bunch of early B58s, but no Z4/Supra explicitly listed.
