Question 1: what does the “C5” designation on the Toyota branded oil mean (e.g., special ingredients, special properties, magical powers, etc)?

Toyota Genuine Motor Oil SN
OW-20 C5 for GR Toyota Supra

Question 2: does the BMW branded oil have whatever the “C5” designates on the Toyota branded oil?

BMW Longlife-17 FE+ OW-20

I always learn something new on these oil threads. Thanks everyone!

The FE is Fuel Economy
BMW has progressively moved onto thinner weight oils for reduced fuel consumption
When you see "FE" in a BMW spec, meaning Fuel Economy, that indicates the HTHS is in the dexos1-GF5-SN range for xw20 or xw30 oils, "2.6 to 3.1 usually. LL-01 & LL-04 have HTHS greater than 3.4

Thanks for explaining the FE designation. Does the “C5” stand for fuel economy too or something else? Just curious. Thanks!

The ACEA C-5 designation is all about lower emissions and less damage to the catalytic converter in the long run. It has lower amounts of phosphorus and sulfur. If you're running a catless downpipe, you no longer need to worry about sticking with C-5 certified oils.

I use extra virgin olive oil from Walmart… great value brand. No issues with only 1 oil change in 50k miles👌🏼
Blackstone report or it didn't happen

Regarding the LL-01 spec with higher HTHS values, does anyone know what the HTHS value is for the GR factory oil? I came across this: https://msdspds.castrol.com/bpglis/...00502BD80258751006E6013/$File/wepp-c6wrb7.pdf However, it does not specify the HTHS. Will EDGE 0W-20 LL-17 FE+ suffice, or do we need a SP/C5 LL-17 FE+ oil with a higher HTHS than 3.1?

Tracking the crap out of mine. Liqui Molly 5-30 has been great down here in FloRida. I just asked the BMW racing guys what they were using in their B58 engine track cars.
