If a new Supra model comes out with the S58 with a DCT or ZF8 speed option it would be the first vehicle outside of the new Lotus that has me interested in a trade in. Sadly 100% of those ECU's would be locked so you would be looking at keeping the car stock for quite a while.

I didn't believe any rumor ever until 1 person posted it. If anyone has been in the AE86 community OR the FRS/BRZ/86 community then y'all know Moto Miwa. He had hands on development with the 86 platform. And big time connections within Toyota. I still have my doubts, but if anyone got a reliable intel on a manual version i 100% believe it could be him. and he just posted that it looks like it will be announced for a '23 model... Still I wouldn't get rid of mine for one. And i dont think anyone that claims they didn't buy it because it didn't come in manual is really going to go buy one now. but those on the fence may. Maybe Toyota/BMW waited on Nissan to see what the Z response was. still bet 50-60% of Z will have the Auto over the manual. id do more but sometimes Asian sports cars do have a high percentage of manual sales then American sports cars.

Thats IF BMW even allows it right? im sure they have some say in whats being built in their factories? Also we should be seeing testing mules because at least the way it was brought up with the 86 platform, any drivetrain change requires all new testing, certifications and all. At least thats the "reasoning" behind why the86 platform didnt come turbo ever, the cost to redevelop engine, testing, certifications and everything puts the car outside their MSRP target window

They had already done the work before launch doesn't track with this latest speculations. Something's amiss. Maybe did RnD on B58 and now evaluating S58? Or did it with S55???

BMW does offer manual in the M3/4.
To answer the original question: I've driven manual cars my whole life. Learned to race on 'em too. I would not buy this car in a manual form. The ZF8 is marvelous with 8 forward gears and lightening quick shifting. My dumb, sloth-like hands would just slow it down. Yeah yeah, the feeling, more engaged, etc. I get it, but if I want that I just put my hand on the gear lever and throw it into manual mode. They did such a good job mating this car to the tranny, with it's power curve (in stock form) to the ratios of the forward gears.

I'm a die hard manual purist, and I was ready to buy a 2020, until I realized it was auto only. I still test drove one, and pined even more for a row-your-own option, so I decided to wait for the manual to become available, however long it was gonna take.

Then, the day after my 35th birthday, I said fuck it and ordered a Refraction A91, thinking that it'd be fun in the meantime, family and friends could drive it too, and it would retain good value to trade for the stick when Toyota opened the order books.

However, after being promised it would be easy to get one, regional dealers decided not to play ball on dealer-trading us a 2377, even in the dead of winter! So then I gave up, and went back to the original plan... but then flip flopped one last time when I was offered a 21 3.0P at invoice minus holdback, in an attempt to make up for the A91 failure. So I looked into the pipeline, and selected the R. Kelly Yellow 3.0P w/DAP. Zero regrets, and the ZF8HP is a fantastic slushbox.....but I still want the manual.

I don't care that it's slower, at least they'll get to see my shit-eating-grin in their rearview mirror, because I drive for FUN, not track times.

Great news that a manual is on the way - at last!

I'm a manual fan and at no point since learning to drive (many years ago) have I ever desired for an autobox - no matter how quick they change gear and no matter how much faster to 60mph they may be over the manual version.

So I am now re-gaining some interest in the MkV Supra to see what the manual will be like to drive and hoping that there is something that can be done about all the fakery that is currently on the vehicle.
Especially all the fake vents and the fake engine noise pumped in to the cabin by the speakers.
Also hoping they don't install the 'fake' auto-rev match on the manual box for down changes as BMW did with the M2.

I'll likely be waiting for the 2024 model year with the manual box to arrive, as I believe that may have the M4 engine in it. Hoping it will any ways.

Don't get excited until it's really announced. Testing/prototyping is one thing, offering it for sale is another.

because I drive for FUN,
Me too!

not track times.
This ^ is the thing that's fun for me. Beating my old track times.

Everyone drives for a different reason. I'd honestly love to add a 2.0 w/ a manual and a ton of suspension work to the stable, but I wouldn't bother with a 3.0 manual. If I'm going to throw the thing around, I feel like the 2.0 would be where it's at.

The S58s are paired to a ZF not a DCT
Yeah just me wishing but hoping BMW puts the S58 in the upcoming M2 and keeps the DCT and that would carryover to the super high end Supra.

I might just sell my car for that one....

What is wrong with the B58??? The MKV just needs a manual option, 6 piston calipers, lighter wheels, and some flashier aero and it’s good to go!

This whole situation with the S58 potentially being thrown into the Supra reminds me of when BMW decided to "upgrade" the M2 with the S55.

If you guys aren't familiar with that whole debacle, I'll try to summarize it for you....

In short, lots of regular M2 owners were initially really pissed off about the news. But once the car released, it honestly wasn't that worth it to upgrade. The car was slightly faster but also weighed about 100-150 lbs more. Although a lot of M2 owners ended up switching to the M2 comp (with the S55), they did so mainly because BMW threw in a hoist of other upgrades. These upgrades included better seats, interior, BRAKES....etc... which made things worth it.

Now I'm not sure what Toyota has in store for the Supra but I can imagine the same scenario playing out if they did end up throwing a bunch of other upgrades a long with the S58.

Also regarding the manual, I could totally see them throwing it in. They would totally lose market share to the 400z. They also (I believe) have a manual transmission that could work in the Supra already so it just seems like a no brainer option for Toyota to capture that audience.
